Default Advice requested: scented room fresheners

Ok, so today I bought some Glade Plug-Ins room fresheners to keep my house smelling good.

I plugged it in and put it on the lowest setting and within about 20 minutes I'm pretty sure I had chemical burns in my nasal cavity and my eyes were bleeding.

Can anyone recommend some room air fresheners that are very subtle .. preferably in the Vanilla variety?

I don't use them too often, but the scented Method candles are quite subtle. I usually start sneezing with a strong scent, but I don't mind these. You can get them at Safeway near the other air fresheners.

I would go with a scented candle as well, the method ones are nice, but no straight vanilla. I believe they only have peppermint vanilla or vanilla apple (my fave).

Those Glade plug-ins are a bitter subject in my house. I hate them, can't stand them. My wife loves them and constantly buys them. I find them tacky and bulky, they never sit flush to the wall, and they fall to the floor if they are barely touched. This happens all the time because my wife has a knack for placing them in the most visible, high traffic areas. To top it off, she buys the refillable kinds, and then never gets refills, so they sit empty, and plugged in for weeks. The woman has spent hundreds at PartyLite parties and such, why she can't light a fargin' candle is beyond me.

I used to think that opening windows freshened up the place at night. Now i live near a feedlot. Somehow the aroma cow manure doesn't smell so good.
