Default Lets talk about interlock metal roofing

My wife and I have been considering this for our new home. We have yet to dive into research on it but my wife's folks have it on their home and they really like it.

Does anybody have this stuff? Or know of potential problems with the product?
Potential Issues with our climate?

We talked to the sales guy yesterday at the Stampede but I would like to back armed with a few more questions.

So Lets Talk About Interlock Metal Roofing...

my folks have an interlocking metal roof over their balcony. from what i recall the install was fairly easy to do (my dad and i did it a number of years ago)

they seem to still like it... but when it rains it's soooooooo noisy!

^^^ thanks I didn't think about that. I wonder if the sound would be dampened by the attic and insulation.

Also, in YYC there is definitely the issue of hail and how it would impact the product. Would be curious to know.

I'm curious as to how it would handle the constant freeze and thaw, it might warp?

The guy said hail can dent it but it takes significant size (golfball) to incur damages, and if your home is being pelted with a slice from Jesus I am not sure that most roofs will hold up.

The product is aluminum so it supposedly dissipates the heat quickly but I think this is a very valid question. I wonder how much contraction/expansion the product has in a given year especially with our mood swings.

The rain sound is EXACTLY why I want one - that and the looks too.

It shouldn't affect it. Metal won't warp or be affected by the freeze/thaw cycles.

Make sure you have a good underlay installed on top of the plywood, prior to application of the metal shingles. Also, make sure you have a self adhere membrane such as Ice and Water Shield installed at all valleys and at the eave edges.

The underlay should be 25 lb asphalt impregnated felt as a minimum.

Other than the possible denting of the shingles by extreme hail, the only other thing I would check out is the finish. What type of factory applied finish are they using (it makes a difference as to which type of prefinished paint system they are using). On commercial project, I usually specify something like Baycoat Prosectra Series or Vicwest Weather-X series, as a minimum. The problem you could have, with an inferior finish, is fading. It could be severe if you have something like a red shingle colour. Anyway, ask them what type of guarantee they have for both the finish (against fading) and for the entire roof (against failure, including leaks).

Also, expansion and contraction should be designed into the shingle system at the interlock, but it's a good question for the roof sales person.
