damn you iPod
had to put the album cover artwork feature in, making me realize how much better browsing my music collection is when it's there
adding the artwork to 40 gigs worth of albums takes a long time...

yeah, i never used it. so, i really do not know how well it works. here is the link in case you want to try.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1815
could save some time, could make your life more miserable.
- Open iTunes Preferences
Mac: Choose iTunes > Preferences.
Windows: Choose Edit > Preferences.
- Click Store.
- Select the "Automatically download missing album artwork" checkbox.

i have no desire to install iTunes on this machine, i'm staying far away from that bloated piece of garbage. what i did use was Easy CD-DA Extractor, this is an awesome piece of software. it does CD ripping in every format imaginable, burning, audio conversion, batch file renaming, and batch metadata editing, which is where the cover artwork came in to play. fantastic editor too, hit one button and it will automatically search all the Amazon sites for the coverwork and let you choose the best one, that right there got me 95% of all the covers i needed. it also allowed me to clean up all of the ID3 info in my music collection at the same time, very handy
all in all it only took me a couple of hours with that program so it wasn't too bad. i did try an automated program before but it screwed up badly, putting black squares for most of the artwork and the wrong artist completely for others. this was the best solution i found

Odd, I found the iTunes way to be effective. It did most of my music, but considering I listen to some pretty heavy stuff it couldn't find all of it. Most for me though is good with 43GB of music.

+1
I've been using this program as my primary CD ripper for some time, but I was so impressed with the new incarnation ... version 12, I believe ... released last year, that I actually splurged and doled out money for the full version. I was a bit disappointed that they decided to turn the free version into a 30-day trial program, and I can't recall the last time I paid for any piece of non-game, non-OS software (I don't think I'm running any cracked or illegal software atm), so it is really saying something that I put up the dough for this app. Nothing else I've tried on PC comes close.
Needless to say, I second Hemi-Cuda's recommendation of Easy CD-DA Extractor.

Whoa, I had to check the post date on this, they've had this feature for quite some time.
You can even have artwork for specific tracks if the artist did that. Happens with some downloadable content.
But yeah, most of mine just have that grey music note too.

Better audio quality. No DRM. If it's music I care about, I buy the CD.

No drm anymore, but I'll give you the point on quality. Personally I'm not enough I an audiophile to notice the quality difference.
