Diagnosing Toe Injury - Broken, Sprained or Bruise?
So, I got kicked in the toe in soccer yesterday. I got slight mobility (I can move it now, couldn't move it before), I can somewhat walk on it with a limp, its swollen double the size of my other toe, and its half bruised.
So, anyone know if its broken, sprained or just bruised?
Thanks

Go see your GP and get it checked out.

I am not a doctor (obviously)...
In my past personal experience, whether a toe is broken, sprained or bruised is usually a distinction without a difference. Unless it's the big toe or it's jutting off in some crazy angle, there's not really much you can do about it. Ice it up, tape it to the toe beside it and go about your business.

Until your toenail turns green and explodes off of your foot like a missile.

I agree. If it's pointing in the same direction as it used to, they probably won't do anything to it if it was broken. May want to get it checked out though just in case. I fractured both my ankles and didn't know for 5 years until I had X-rays for a different reason.

Like everyone else said, probably not much you can do about it even if it is broken.
My advice?
Walk it off.

I actually lost the toe nail on both my big toes at the same time. Twice. They never turned green but did obtain a rather pleasant purple hue. Having gone through the experience twice now, if I had my druthers I would prefer to have no toe nails at all.

Do they cast toes? I'd go get it checked out at some point, if it is broken it'll probably set fine anyways but you may get some extra protection so you don't bump it or hurt it again.
I had a full break in my arm about a year ago, thought it was just a sprain for almost 2 weeks before finally getting it xrayed!

Toe nail is ok, toe is facing the right direction. I was going to tape it up and go skiing today, but couldn't walk on it.
I'm hoping its just bruised since I got another game in a couple days.

I swear the most painful injury that I've ever had was when I took a hot line drive off of my big toe.
Breaking my legs, blowing out my knee's
Getting stabbed through the hand by my sister
Those didn't compare to a toe injury.

^ Yeah after this, I honestly don't think I'll ever knock a (hockey) player for sitting out with a toe injury. (Granted my toe nail isn't peeling off)

I am actually down one big toe nail right now. Indeed it's not fun. The day the nail came off, the toe hurt so much because the nail bed was drying out and cracking that i literally did not sleep a wink. 5 in the morning and sleep wasn't even on my mind.

Stay off it and keep it elevated. If it continues to hurt or gets worse within 24 hours, go to a dr, since you aren't going today apparently. Men are ridiculous for this. If you can't walk on the thing, likely there's something wrong. You really should just go to the Dr and find out what it is.

Pour some water on it princess, and get back on the field......
You might want to get it x-rayed if you're thinking it's broken. I have a few ET fingers because I didn't bother, and if I had of gone in they would have set them properly.
Thank god it's not my middle finger though. How else would I be able to drive in Calgary???

I've broken and/or bruised more toes than I can remember or count, and you're 100% correct. They hurt like hades, but unless it's a badly broken big toe all the doctor is going to do is give you a painkiller prescription. Might as well just tank up on Tylenol with codeine and save yourself a long wait in a doc's office or ER. I find washing Tylenol & codeine down with scotch amplifies the analgesic benefit as well.

I'm not a doctor, but I think that it's your toe that is giving you problems.
You're welcome, that'll be $80 for the visit.

For me it was the walking part and having my sock constantly rub against the skin where the nail used to be
