Default US Court Shuts Down Government Whistle Blower Site

Freedom reigns! ...Just as long as it doesn't include anything provoking free thought.

Nope, no controlling the flow of media in the US.

Whistle-blower site taken offline

The case was brought by lawyers working for a Swiss bank
A controversial website that allows whistle-blowers to anonymously post government and corporate documents has been taken offline in the US.
Wikileaks.org, as it is known, was cut off from the internet following a California court ruling, the site says.

The case was brought by a Swiss bank after "several hundred" documents were posted about its offshore activities.

Other versions of the pages, hosted in countries such as Belgium and India, can still be accessed.
However, the main site was taken offline after the court ordered that Dynadot, which controls the site's domain name, should remove all traces of wikileaks from its servers.

It seems like they were under a DDoS attack first.

Then the court order.

From my understanding, the order only applies to the server(s) located
in California. All other servers remain up and running. The order
was to remove and lockout DNS records so...

The California server can be reached by ip address at
http://88.80.13.160/wiki/Wikileaks

From the above link, "The Wikileaks.org injunction is ex-parte, engages in prior restraint and is clearly unconstitutional. It was granted on Thursday afternoon by California district court judge White, Bush appointee and former prosecutor."

Also, "...Wikileaks was given only hours notice "by email" prior to the hearing. Wikileaks was NOT represented. Wikileaks pre-litigation California council Julie Turner attended the start of hearing in a personal capacity but was then asked to leave the court room."

As it stands, I think now you can download the whole site from
bittorrent. The site is now being copied around the internet. With this
move, the bank that initiated this, Bank Julius Baer, made wikileaks
much more infamous, and has made themselves known as crooks
(whether the allegation is true, untrue, or somewhere inbetween).

Another company, court, and by extension, government, who doesn't
understand how the internet works. Wish I could find the person who
quoted, "The internet sees censorship as damage, and then routes
around it."

Haha, so you do. I've began readin the NY Times more and more lately, there's an encouraging trend in the openness of their journalism. You linked an interesting article there forsure, raises a lot of points.

This scares me a bit:

Governments around the world, most notably here in Britain but recently in the US, want internet service providers to keep records of which websites we all visit and who we are exchanging emails with.
