Woman not allowed to ref high school basketball because, well, she's a woman.
In some far off country? Nope.
Quote:
The Kansas State High School Activities Association said referees reported that Michelle Campbell was preparing to officiate at St. Mary's Academy near Topeka on Feb. 2 when a school official insisted that Campbell could not call the game.
The reason given, according to the referees: Campbell, as a woman, could not be put in a position of authority over boys because of the academy's beliefs.

Wow, I'm amazed that this still goes on.

Depends, if the school pays for refs IMO they should be able to choose who refs and who doesnt. If they arent paying for it then suck it up sister. There is very little respect for refs man or woman, the only difference is if you call a woman ref a *itch there might be consequences.

Except that choosing who you hire or not on the basis of their gender is illegal if not down right unconstitutional (not really clear on the American situtation).

This happened in Topeka eh? That's where the Westboro Baptist Church is located. I'm not surprised things like this happen in Topeka.

Historically speaking, how did Kansas become the state where these types of religious issues crop up?

The entirety of the US was initially settled by various evangelical groups. Most were pushed aside by subsequent waves of immigration and the development of European style education institutions in the north helped create a normalized society.
The same development didn't occur in the Southern states and they ended up absorbing a lot of the dislodged religious groups. They bound together, becoming the dominant population group in many of these states. Religious views tend to be more favored in the South on the basis of the population distribution more then anything else. Kansas just happens to be one of these states (and may be one of the main sources for the Baptist movement during it's inception... can't remember right now).
It's certainly more involved then that but that's the basics.

the women are probably deemed too lowly, or they might be afraid the men would succumb to the inherent wickedness in the women and not ref the game fairly.

It kinda makes sense to have male refs for male games, especially (and I have seen this first hand) because male players/coaches/etc. completely disrespect them, they go out of their way to intimidate female referees... probably due to some macho sexist ego trip... and it works. I was disgusted when I saw it. It was both teams too. The male senior linesman had to take the coaches aside at half time and tell them to put leashes on their players (and themselves).
That isn't to say some female refs aren't tough and mean enough to take that on. It also says absolutely nothing about their competency. Outright banning female refs from men's games is pretty archaic, and shouldn't play to the LCD of male players.

Damn that mid-American bible belt. I'll tell you this, if women were allowed to vote there, you would never see this garbage happening.
