Default "Crude" The Passionate Eye

Looks like this thread may be too little, too late, as I don't see a re-run on the schedule in the next few days, but... I watched this episode of The Passionate Eye last night and thought it was verrrry interesting. Yeah, yeah, CBC... Whatever. They've got their slant, we all know, but this show was damn interesting, IMO.
For people that *gasp* aren't in the oil industry, it does a fine job of explaining the science behind how oil is formed. It also got pretty in depth about the history of oil and industry.
Anyway, it may seem a bit elementary to a geologist but to a layman, it is super interesting.

So, to anyone interested in how oil originally formed, how and when it was discovered and the "impact" it "has" on the earth, watch this show. It's called "Crude" and it is an episode of The Passionate Eye, usually seen on channel 15 on Shaw.

I thought it was 7000 years ago. But according to CBC it was a few years more than that.

I wish I didnt miss that program.. I usually soak up anything I can related to oil and gas.. I'll have to keep my eye on the tv guide for the next while..

http://www.cbc.ca/documentaries/disc...rude.html#more
"I've been reading the comments about the documentary.. Looks like a lot of people have had a sudden case of conscience"

Some of them go a bit far, I didnt realize peak oil or global warming were new concepts.. People have been banging the peak oil drum since the late 70's.. If people are interested in peak oil I suggest reading "Twilight in the desert". It talks about the world's gas tank, Saudi Arabia, and how they have likely been deceiving the rest of the world about the state of their oilfields, and how much oil they actually have left..

Just to be clear, it did spend a couple of segments on peak oil, but the show was 2 hours long. It wasn't overbearing in that regard. But I also had a bit of a sudden case of conscience after watching it. Of course, I did jump in my 4.3l 4x4 this morning and put 100+ km on the beast over the course of the day.

I don't really fear peak oil.. Between the oilsands and gasification of coal into diesel we'll get by.. I believe the solution to slowing carbon in the atmosphere is to sequester it underground, this has two benefits, it boosts production in declining fields, and prevents its release into the atmosphere.. This ocean anoxia concept that people were referring to is intriguing, someone posted a comment saying it would happen within 100 years.. But I dont see it happening considering our current temperatures are far below what the dinosaurs thrived in. It states that this event likely happened many times during the jurassic, and cretaceous period. But that it requires median surface temperatures over 25c.. Median temperatures these days are roughly 16c.. It also is assumed that CO2 levels over 1000 ppm are required.. We're at 380ish today.. I definately would like to see the documentary, these sorts of discussions are extremely interesting..

Here is a link to a young earth theory on the creation of oil:

That theory has some fairly biblical implications, I was being sarcastic when I said it was 6000 years.. All of which have essentially been proven wrong by the fossil record ect.. To say its less than 1500 or 2500 years old is highly unlikely.. Heck most instances of burning bushes and enternal fires in the bible were likely formations of petroleum that bubbled to the surface and caught ablaze.. Heres some actual science that will show you the origin of species we see today and a good explaination of the fossil record.. Heck its in our own backyard less than 3 hours away.. http://www.burgess-shale.bc.ca/

Plenty of pseudoscientists have spent their entire lives trying to prove the flood theory when in reality there is very little evidence it took place.. Where did the massive volume of water go when the flood dried up?? Even if we emptied every aquifier below the surface I highly doubt its enough water to completely cover the land..

Wow, "young earth" theory. The part on the creation of oil seemed almost scientific and credible until I found my reading glasses. Young earth theory will be an exciting and informative chapter in the intelligent design textbooks. Don't forget to cite God for all the data or he'll send you to hell.
