Mayerthorpe movie
Just wondering if anyone watched and if you did what you thought of it? I thought it was quite well done. Sure showed the problems with our weak-kneed justice system though. Rozko should have been safely locked away in a jail cell before it ever came to that.
On a side note some scenes of that movie were filmed in the town of Cochrane and surrounding areas.

I avoided this one. I had no desire to see a dramatisation of someones murder.

Third. and the over-the-top advertising of it during the superbowl was, at least to me, disgusting. Shame on CTV.

Let then rest in peace. This dramatising for TV crap is getting irritating

I love watching films of the RCMP getting slaughtered. There should be more of them.
Maybe a reality series entitled:
"RCMP Massacres: Law Enforcement Survivor, who gets voted off via Rifle?"
Who the hell thought this was a good idea and a tribute to these people's families?
All massacres and slaughters should be converted into family-friendly Made-For-TV-Movies.....Seriously, what idiot pulls the trigger on these ideas?

Well, then not watching is the best I can do.
People should be cast into a bottomless abyss for ideas like this.

I know most of the Mayerthorpe town scenes were filmed up in Irricana.
The movie was good, good mix of showing everything preceding the final showdown.

I watched it. I figured I'd get bored and turn the dial but it wasn't badly done and showed the RCMP in a good light. For me it was a big indictment for the justice system though as the cops tried to put this predator away but the laws seemed to protect him.

I was hoping to watch a Simpsons rerun. The wife started on the guide channel (channel 2) and worked her way up. We got stuck on CTV and watched the whole thing.
I had really low expectations going into the movie and wouldn't have felt bad if I never saw the movie. A friend of mine married an RCMP member who was stationed in Mayerthorpe when all that stuff happened so the tragedy hit a little too close to home (he wasn't at the scene that day when things went down).
The movie came in at a solid B-. Not bad as far as made for TV movies go. I don't know the details of Rozko and his run-ins with the police prior to the shooting so it's hard to comment on the failure of the justice system in this regard.

I didn't see the movie. On one hand I can see how it would offend some. On the other if the movie was trying to show that our justice system is a joke and that somethings needs to done. That could be a good thing. Has there been a statement or reaction from any of the families?

I actually watched this with an RCMP officer...overall he said it was pretty close to how it went down with a few exceptions. He had a a report sent to him recently and mentioned that this was still under very heavy investigation.
One of the things he mentioned was that he was pretty sure Rozko was NOT hit by one of the members and was not wounded. He is going to go back and check the report on that though to make sure. He also mentioned a few other things were different like the main RCMP officer was not in the town the entire time. He was actually with a different detachment during the time of the shootings.
Overall I thought it was good and told a pretty good story. Overall very sad to know this actually happened but it did take a good shot at the justice system in general which was needed IMO.

Yep, I also watched it and it was very eye openning to say the least.
At the end they said Rozko had 44 Criminal Charges over the years leading up to this incident and in total he only served 2 years and 8 Months in Jail.

I can't help but wonder how many of those charges were of the "contempt of cop" variety. Even so, if any of the witness tampering allegations that played so prominently in the film are remotely true... There's just no excuse for that.

I'm glad that I watched a US feed of the Superbowl. I didn't hear about this movie, and I don't think I would have wasted any time on it either.
While I think Canadian TV is on an upswing, I don't think this is the type of movie that should be made, unless it was more a tribute to the RCMP rather than the killer or the event itself.

Geez, for the people that thought this was such bad TV, I guess they should hope we can stick with reality singing shows and bad sitcoms. Why shouldn't there be shows based on dramatic and tragic truths?
I thought it was an interesting movie and quite well done, although I am unsure as to the factual accuracy. I didn't find it degrading to the fine men who were killed, unless you find any media attention of tragedies to be classless, but that seems more than a touch naive.
Having said that, I would enjoy a more factual account of what exactly went down. I saw a promo for an upcoming fifth estate that is supposed to be about some of that, I'll have to try to catch that.

To those who think this is glamorizing the death of the officers, it maybe a bit of that, but is more about the failure of our justice system. All the family members of the fallen officers wanted this to be showed so people can see really how we deal with scumbags.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the families were involved in the making of this movie.
I saw the last portion of the movie, starting from when the shootings took place. It brought back a lot of bad memories of that day. The incident hit home to me, and is one of those few events in life that I can remember where I was when it went down. Reliving this terrible tragedy is not something I wanted to do, but in a sense, I think t was a good reminder about the degree of sacrifice that was made that day.

Evidently the character "Const. Alex Stanton" played by Henry Czerny was a composite, encompassing many situations where Roszko had dealings with various RCMP officers.
I thought the movie was well done and helped to string together the whole mess chronologically. I remember the raw emotion on the thread here as details poured in about the shooting back in March 2005. I hope Roszko rots in hell, and I hope this movie helps in some small way to change our justice system.
It was nice to catch a glimpse of the courthouse in Cochrane
