Ever wonder how many ships in the sea?
Neat tracking thing online, used it to check out some cruiseship locations and saw that it tracks all ships at sea! Pretty cool. You can click to zoom in, and even see where the ship has been etc.
http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/shiplocations.phtml
You can also see a world map air temp thing too... Kind of cool to see a quick "how warm is it in Japan right now" thing.

is that only ships currently at sea?
The Bluenose II is in Lunenburg right now, the MV Caribou is either coming form North Sydney NS to Port-aux-Basque NL or vice versa, the MV Leif Ericson is in North Sydney. However where's the 3rd ferry between Cape Breton and Newfoundland, the MV Joseph and Clara Smallwood?
How come there's only one ship in Halifax Harbour?
Why is the CCGS Terry Fox shown but n ot allt he Coast Guard ships?
The Halifax Ferries aren't shown. It's understandable that the military ships aren't, however why is one CCGS but not the others? Actually why is one?
I can almost guarantee there are cargo ships docked in Halifax harbour right now that aren't on the map.
I didn't go through the background, but clearly that's not every ship out there, not even the ferries and cargo ones.

That's a brave and dangerous thing to do. Some family friends of ours set out to do the same thing, but were killed by pirates. Seriously. Pirates are still very much a problem in many areas of the world.

Took a read through their blog Cheese and it sounds like the trip of a lifetime. Be fascinating just to see all the wildlife. When we lived in China it was so cheap to rent a boat that I would take the family out on excursions to just sit and watch the dolphins. Great stuff and way better than just watching it on TV or seeing them from a big ship.
Got to hand it to them -- a brave duo.

A Brave duo no doubt! When they announced it, it took everyone by surprise. Steven is not what one would think of as a mans man so to speak...he almost seemed just like your standard effeminate Architect!
They werent able to have kids and thought why waste away in an office...bought a boat, took lessons for almost 3 years with noone knowing a godamned thing and then announced about 2 months before leaving. Sold house, Cars, all the contents and that was that. They suggest the cost is around $2-3Gs a month...so doing the math for a 4 year trip it isnt cheap. In saying all of this I am EXTREMELY jealous that they had the cajones to do this..I live vicariously through their travels in my daydreams.
Ford Prefect...we did talk about Pirates and they did do quite a bit of research as to where they might have problems...those areas most boaters travel in groups and try not to get caught on their own.
I cant imagine the stories they will have when they come back...but I just cant see either of them moving back into a 9-5 job behind a desk.
Maybe Ill buy their boat and start lessons.......<dream>

So all I would need was a link to this website, a GPS navigation system, a cold war era type 519 submarine and some torpedo's and I could start blackmailing cruise lines

Or you could start your own tourist cruise line:
CaptainCrunch's Torpedo Cruise Extravaganza Inc.
Guaranteed to sink 2 or more cruise ships per outing. CC keeps teh loot!

I can see the reviews already.
"The Food was excellent, but the service was awful!"
"Many, many concussions"
"They ran out of lifejackets! I dont think they had any to begin with."
"Dude stole my wallet. While I was looking. I was looking right at him and then BAM, stole my wallet. He even cackled at me a little."

I've done several cruises and have another scheduled late March and early April in the Caribbean. That world map is cool. Anyone who thinks that's a lot of ships, it's a frigging huge ocean. You could have two dots that look right next to each other and those ships might not see each other.
How up to date is that map? How often does it get updated?
