IE question

My Internet Explorer somehow has lost the top line - where the forward and back arrows are located as well as the line where I enter a URL and the google box is located. I've closed and reopened IE and same thing happens. I can get the line back if I move my cursor all the way to the top of the IE screen but I want the line to be there permanently. How do I restore it? I have the newest version and unlike previous versions I don't see anywhere I can change preferences.

However you can probably fix it by right clicking on the menu bar and checking one of the options there, like navigation bar ( or something like that)

Is this on Vista? Or is it IE7 running on XP?

IE7 doesn't let you toggle the address bar directly, so this is a wierd bug. Perhaps you are running something in the background that is preventing it?

I'm happy to report that Firefox and Opera do not currently suffer from this bug

You must be running it in full screen (ie. also known as kiosk mode I think). If you put your mouse up to the top of the screen does it slide down from the top and show up. If so then all you have to do is press "alt+enter" to get out of this mode and visa versa.

Just a quick addition: F11 will also toggle kiosk mode.

Main reasons:
- IE allows automatic execution of code. Most of it has been fixed, but it still remains more vulnerable then most other browsers.
- IE charges for plugins (seriously, wtf?).
- IE remains less then 50% compatible with web language standards. Not a big deal for users, but for web developers, continued use of IE makes our lives hellish. Yeah, I'm biased here.
- Firefox is good karma. It's not made by a soul sucking evil corporation

• Opera
• Internet Explorer (all versions)

Is it an easy switch over to Firefox or will it require me to make other changes on my computer? IOW, can I just install FF and run with it, or is there more to it?

Just install and import your favorites to Firefox. No other changes required. If you don't like it you can always go back.

But really though, give Firefox a try. It looks just like Internet Explorer 6, imports your favourites automatically and is a nicer browser over all. Plus, you can pimp it out with cool themes.

Opera is a good product, but it's a big change from either IE or Firefox. I've never been able to get comfortable using it.

Best part about FF for me is IETab. The extension lets you run a page in IE rendering. So if you have any Microsoft only sites you go to (like my work internal pages) then I have them automatically render in IE, and you can switch back and forth with a click of an icon.
