Default How Long Can You Go Without Sleep?

I have been working a ton lately, and am only getting 3-4 hours of sleep per night. I wanted to ask everyone here how much sleep they usually get in a night, how much sleep they need in a night, and what's the longest they've ever stayed up at a time?

For me:

I usually get 5-6 hours per night.

I need 6-7 hours per night.

The longest I have ever stayed up is 40 hours. It was terrible.

Usually around 6 hours. Even on weekends, I can never sleep in for some reason.

I stayed up for more than 3 days straight. I can't remember exactly how long it was, but it was definitely 3 days (72 hours).

I used to do that all the time, and then i turned 26 and i couldn't do it anymore. In fact i think i am now paying a price for that recklessness and am more tired then most people i know.

I have worked 32-hour-straight shifts (4 x 8hr) between two jobs before, i have stayed up 3 days straight many-a-time, i have worked two full times jobs and gone to university full time all at once. And while i used to brag about it i now regret it.

I would stop it as soon as you can - but people told me that once and i ignored them too...

Good luck though!

I'm a giant baby when I don't get my sleep. Usually need 7-9 hours per night. Longest I've stayed up was two days, hated it.

The problem is that it's so expensive to live here, I have a mortgage to pay, a family to feed and care for and my company is short staffed. I need all the hours I can get. I am up to around 80 hours per week and I am starting to feel really worn out. I have been doing this for around 18 months now, but it's just getting progressively worse. Thank god I got Sunday off this week, but it's hard to sleep in when I want to spend time with my family too. I am thinking this is probably not healthy but right now I see no other option.

7 hours is enough for me. Can't seem to sleep more than 9 if I try to sleep in.

I work at a place with flex-hours, so I get 9 solid hours a night -- weekdays and weeknights. A long time ago when I had to leave home at 6:30 to get to work on time, I was constantly tired on eht weekdays. Now I always feel alert, its fantastic. And I think the quality of my work is better as a result. I think more places need to implement flex hours.

The longest I ever went without sleep was about 36 hours. It was delay after delay during air travel, and I can't sleep on planes or in airports. It was awful, never want to do that again.

I need 6, usually get 8. Anything less than 6 and I'm in tough for the whole day.

I usually get 6-7 hours per night.

I need 8 hours per night.

43 hours was my record... it was not pretty, it really is amazing what sleep deprivation will do...

I average about 6 to 7 hours on weekdays, and probably closer to 10 hrs on the weekend. I can sleep into 2 in the afternoon sometimes on the weekend.

About 36hrs is the longest in a row i have stayed up, and i hated it... i was hallucinating allready.

Lots of tea/coffee/caffinated drinks... and the motivation to get something done.

How do you feel after? Are you able to sleep like 16 hours at once. Are you tired for days after?

I sleep 7 hours per night. Even on weekends. But for me it depends on how busy my life is. When I lived in Rome I would usually be up at 7am to check on the hostel, then work for a few hours until it was time to get the nightly party started. Then I'd usually be up until 2 or 3. Then up at 7 again. It didn't bother me. In fact, I didn't even use a clock. No alarms, no set times to be anywhere or do anything.
On the flip side, I've gone on sprees where I sleep 9 hours per night. Most recently was around xmas time. My industry is dead around that time so I got to sleep as much as I wanted. A couple of those days I stayed in bed until noon. Had my laptop on my bedstand and a TV on my dresser. Stay in bed until nature calls.
Longest I've ever stayed up is 2 days (skipped a night of sleep and carried on through the next day until night time).

I'm not a sleeper, I'm usually up until 1 or 1:30, then I get out of bed at 6:30. On the weekends, I'll be up til about 2 or 2:30 and up at 8:00

Longest I've been up was 72 hours in the military, but in the end, I was literally hallucinating.

I am up from 8am Sunday until at least 10pm Monday night every week.

I work an overnight shift Sunday night, then I come home at 6am, my wife works at 7, so I'm home with the rugrats all day. Then, when she is home at 4:30, I can't seem to sleep until later that evening. It sucks, but its worth it not to pay child care rates for two kids under 3.

Doing a military course this past fall I got 70 hours as my exact record with no sleep outside of dozing off for like 30 seconds here or there. The first 24 hours are hard, the next 24 are a little easier as I think your body finally concedes defeat to your mind that there will be no sleep. The final stretch is a gong show. You are hallucinating, becoming a lot less situationally aware and falling into a deep sleep while standing up throughout, but after 2+ days it starts to get real bad. Your body can still function but you're like a zombie. Only got like 3 hours of sleep at the end then had to stay up another 30 hours before I finally got some real rest.

I've definitely pulled a few all nighters for papers that were due as well. Best way to get a paper done or study for a test I say!
