Default Iran to kill two women

because they are on a tape with other men.

TEHRAN (AFP) - Two Iranian sisters convicted of adultery face being stoned to death after the supreme court upheld the death sentences against them, the Etemad newspaper Monday quoted their lawyer as saying. The two were found guilty of adultery -- a capital crime in Islamic Iran -- after the husband of one sister presented video evidence showing them in the company of other men while he was away.

The pair admitted they were in the video presented by the husband but argued that there was no adultery as none of the footage showed them engaged in a sexual act with other men.

I can't believe this can happen in the 21st century...but then again Iran (according to its own calendar) is in the year 1386, so it has 6 centuries to become a normal civilized country.

I think this is absolutely stupid that they are being stoned to death for this.

However playing Devil's Advocate here, there have been numerous cases in Iran where women were stoned to death for being in the presence of other men (one was just in a car a month ago). If you choose to live in a country where it's a law not to do that and you know the consequences, then why do it? I'm totally against the punishment they are getting and think it's ridiculous but it's a law in that country (as stupid as it is).

I dont think they have much choice about where they live. Hence Iran's villification via Women's Rights advocates.

Ie. Have fun crossing a border in a Burka without a man.

BTW, I wonder who gets to throw the stones? Do they have designated "stone-throwing" officials? Is it kinda like a firing squad?

Yeah how does stone throwing work, and why would they choose such a stupid method? Do they use slingshots, or just arm? I'm seriously curious.

If it's a law, it's a law but honestly.. no other humane way of going about this? Hell a beheading or hanging would be more human than a freaking stoning.

There isn't anything humane about ending the lives of women who didn't do anything wrong, regardless of how the punishment is handed out. This is completely backward regardless of whether it's an Iranian law or not.

So...if it's a law, it's a law therefore it's somewhat understandable? Wow I cannot even begin to express my disagreement.

Second, there was no proof they actauly broke the law (comitted adultery). So in fact, they were senteced against this stupid "law"

To conclude - not only you have a stupid law, but you do not actually require a proof in order to sentence people to death...

Democracy should be sweeping through the Middle East any time now...

As far as I'm concerned, Western countries have no business there. I wish we'd just cut ourselves off from countries with insane laws and customs. There's really no use complaining about it if we still choose to support them by doing business with them and having diplomatic relationships.

I wonder if they sell tickets to the event?

Or does that cross their moral line?

I guess it's sweeps week... they need to mix it up like this when executing the homosexual population becomes too mundane.

That's why the West is there. To try and influence and change their insane way of life. It seems futile and frustrating at times but small steps have to be taken. No western presence or media there would mean there would never be any hope for change.

In the past 200 years that the British and Americans have been interfering in the Middle East, it hasn't made a lick of difference. In fact, fundamentalism has increased in many countries in that region. We're there for the primary purpose of making money and exerting power.

I agree, but its difficult. I think the West should support the opposition in places like this (that includes Cuba, Belarus, etc.) but unless the people living in mud huts want a change, no significant change has a chance, and the probable result will be more bad blood between countries and oil to the fire for left wing moralists.

Way to look WAYYYY to deep into what I said.. I'm not saying I agree with the law and think Free countries should abide by it...

But if you live in a country, bizarre and twisted as it's laws might be... You'd think you'd abide by them knowing the consequences.

That's all i'm saying.

It is futile unless the West is prepared to spend the rest of time there playing policeman forever.

Philosophies and beliefs that are forcibly imposed by foreign interests do not have an amazing historical track record for success.

Bludgeoning someone into thinking like you typically results in breeding hatred rather than cooperation.

Right. So let them do it or not do it. If its done for them then it likely isnt sustainable in your absence, and your continued presence and desire to change their culture to be more like yours will piss them off while you're there.

Sorry, I used the royal 'we' there, I'm not specifically referring to you.
