Going to Ottawa...
I am going to Ottawa in a few weeks, for the first time.
Any ideas or suggestions as to what I should check out?
Too bad the Flames aren't in town when I am visiting...
Thanks!

The touristy stuff in Ottawa includes tours of the parliament buildings, skating on the Rideau Canal, trips to all the different museums and displays, fun-booze filled nights across the border in Gatineau-Hull, the Casino in Gatineau. I'd recommend the Canadian Museum of Civilization (The funny looking large building on the river in Gatineau-Hull) as a must see.

I'm not sure if it still around. The name always made me laugh. Hubba Bubba's was on Richmond Rd. near Churchill.

Someone from the office was there in December and said you couldn't go skating yet this year. Has that improved any?

It's not open yet.
It hasn't opened because Ottawa had, what sure seemed like, a chinook shortly after Christmas. My yard went from almost 6' of snow to a light layer in a span of days.
It's plenty cold here now though and it should be open in a few weeks. Don't miss having a beaver tail if you go for a skate. It was always my favourite part of the experience.

I have family there that I saw a few weeks ago.
The past few winters it's been fairly warm until January and skating on the Rideau opened late. It's been plenty cold and snowy there this winter. Interestingly enough last year was the lastest the canal opened(sometime in January) but also the latest it closed (Sometime in late March).
BTW I forgot to mention Winterlude there which should be coming up pretty soon (Don't know the actual dates).

It's nice also to walk around the embassy district, some really nice old houses and it is fun to try to guess the embassy based on the flag. It's as nice and cozy a diplomatic district as you would find anywhere in the world (when I was there in June I was conscious as I stepped out of my ex-girlfriend's shower that the Austrian embassy looks right into her bathroom.)
Good luck finding a Tim Horton's anywhere downtown, other than the Rideau Centre.

I know... when you see what a sweet car Hitler had, and then you look at the rust bucket you're driving around, it makes you feel like you haven't accomplished very much.

I went in November and caught the Senators playing Montreal (standing room only). I had an amazing time though, the arena is great and the standing room was actually pretty decent. I recommend checking it out.

There's loads of museums in Ottawa you can check out.
Science and Tech, Royal Mint (I dunno if its opened ATM), Aviation museum, War Museum, Museum of Civilization...
With the weather the way it is now, the Canal should be open in several weeks... should the temperature stay relatively close to this level.
Byward market is always nice, lots of bars/pubs and u could definitely catch a game there...
And if u're over 19 and wanna drink... don't go to Hull, its a dump.

Agreed on this.
The Hull strip used to be a crazy place to go but the local government cracked down on the clubs and along with a later last call in Ontario, the scene ended.

Become your own despot and start a world war and you'll get a great car, too.
Hitler's car is awesome. Check out the bullet holes in the seat. The war museum is a must-see if you like history.
YOu can also contact your MP in advance and he/she may arrange to meet you and show you around the hill.

I actually did that ^^
Called Jason Kenney's office up, and arranged a meet and greet.
Got there, and they tell me he's out of the country!
Oh well, got to hang out in his office and meet all his staff. Kenney has a ballin' office (its actually very 60's ish and ugly), but huge compared to the rest of the MP's. I think it was because he's in tight with Harper, and is the Minster of Multiculturalism or something.
Also... MP aid's :P
