She made a mistake, and I think the issue should have been dead with Tiger's acceptance of her apology.

Controversy sells. Golfweek is trying to sell magazines. I hope most people avoid buying it just out of principle. It's a cheap stunt by the magazine.

Y'know? Prior to this incident, I didn't even know that the word 'lynch' had any racial background. As far as I was ever concerned, it was/is a term for ganging up and beating someone that has done something infuriating.
It is stuff like this that keeps racism alive. I would argue that the commentator is the one that is color blind and the people upset over the comment are the racists.

I know that that wasn't the point of the thread, but what the hell are you going to do about it? Lynch me? I'm not black.

I didn't realize until this happened that "lynch" was a bad thing to say to people in the black communitity.

It was pretty hypocritical for Golfweek to put an admittedly provocative image on the cover then have a column inside saying the controversy should be kept in context.

Tiger stated today that the issue is resolved and there's no ill will.

http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=3207259

However, there are those in the black community and some black sports columnists that want Tiger to take a stand against this.

Tiger is so revered in the black community despite not considering himself "black" (Cablinasian) that civil rights activists are wanting someone of Tiger's stature to make a big deal about the lynch comment as a step forward in the civil rights movement. I wouldnt be surprised if after several years and a few more incidents like this one (or the comments made by Fuzzy Zoeller in 1997) that Tiger Woods starts to become considered a "sellout" for not acting like Al Sharpton and tearing into people who make unfortunate comments like Kelly Tilghman did.

I think this guy said it best in the first article:

Quote:
In the magazine's news story noted sociologist Harry Edwards said the public should accept Tilghman's apology.
"If we stopped the train every time somebody made a dumb remark that is potentially offensive," he is quoted as saying, "we'd never progress as a society."
Jesse Jackson and Sharpton have their place (because racism does exist), but sometimes their antics have no business in society and arguably are doing more harm than good in some cases. They tend to dance a line between activism and grandstanding.

Now Jim Brown is piping up.

Tiger doesnt owe anything to these people that criticizes him and certainly doesnt have to become a figure head for the civil rights movement in the US. Especially when he doesnt consider himself "black".
