Is this thread really going to go anywhere? We know this is a hot button topic here up there with speeding, bringing Fleury back, and homelessness.
I'll summarize the warring factions viewpoints and save some time:
Winter/Ice tires perform better in the white stuff. They stop faster and just plain grip better.
However, driven with care and skill, that extra grip and performance of an ice/winter tire can be compensated for and is not needed.
Now lets all go back to discussing how we trade Tanguay!

"all season" tires are actually three sesaon tires. there is no tire that is recommended for "all" seasons. winter tires are recommended for winter.

Personally I think winter tires are a waste of money in this town.. We get so little snow that most of the time your just wasting fuel by driving on dry asphalt with them. They dont make driving on ice any better, I barely noticed a difference when I had them on my mustang.. I'll stick with my all-seasons on my truck and click it into 4x4 when i have trouble getting going..

your right they don't make a difference driving on dry pavement. but totally wrong driving on ice. its a night and day difference from all season tires compared to winter tires. as well 4 winter tires is what should be used not 2 on the drive wheels.

I don't deal with snow, but I'd like to give Kudos to BMW's dynamic traction control. Since we're flooded out down here I really appreciate that it seems nearly impossible to hydroplane in my car.

Driving on sheer ice it makes absolutely no difference.. I worked in tires for a few years, thats the biggest misconception about them.. They help get traction on snow, but thats about it.. Unless you have studded tires the difference on ice is negligible..

i also worked at a tire shop and i don't know where you got your info but they do make a differnce on ice. try walking on ice with flat bottom shoes, and again with very knoby shoes, you will soon see a difference.

I have a 4X4 and I just changed from 4 mismatched balding tires to 4 All Season. What a difference.
All hail the All Seasons.

I coulda sworn that Hulkrogan was one of the proponents of winter tires. I think this thread is a sarcastic attempt at alerting us all-seasoners that it is going to snow tonight and it is going to be very cold and under those conditions, all-seasons do not perform nearly as well as winter tires.
I'm still not sold. It is almost February and there have been ~10 days where winter tires would have been a significant help. by the end of winter that number may double. It is just as easy to slowww down and drive carefully.

I really don't see the parallel, thats like comparing racing slicks and 4x4 tires.. I still can't see the value here in calgary, but if you wanna throw down $1000+ every 2-3 years I guess thats your call..

i'm not in calgary and i never said it was worth it in calgary, winter tires are worth it in winter conditions, no question! the difference is night and day. anyone who says there is no difference between winter tires and all season have not drivin on a set of winter tires in winter conditions.

Well that essentially was the crux of my arguement.. I would definately buy them if I lived somewhere where it snows on a consistent basis.. But here in calgary with our chinooks and lack of snow I just don't see why...

The reminds me of the Southpark Smug episode! I can feel the smug cloud settling over the CP off topic forum.
