Default New computer problems

So I built my new computer last week and I've been having some issues getting games to run. Essentially any game I try gives me the same error when I try and run the installer: "Setup.exe has stopped working"

I've tried Oblivion, Thief: Deadly Shadows, Bioshock, World in Conflict, Civ 4 and some others and I keep getting the exact same error.

I did get Company of Heroes and the Bioshock demo off of Steam to install. Those start up okay, go through the dev, producer, etc. screens and then crash as soon as it gets to the main menu. It gives me a quick blue screen and then restarts the computer.

I can try and get some pictures of the error if would help.

Oh, and my computer specs:
Q6600
8800 GT
ASUS P5K-E
Vista 64-bit
4GB RAM

My first thought is that it has something to do with Vista, but I've never heard of it preventing you from playing so many titles. Does anything currently work on your machine?

I looked up a couple of those titles and it appears they all run fine in Vista x64

Have you updated all your drivers?

I'm wondering if it some sort of sercurom issue. Logs from the event viewer may be helpful.

Everything else I've installed has worked fine.

I haven't installed anything major yet, but stuff like my camera's photo-editing program, Word, etc. has installed without a problem.

I installed all the software that came with my computer. I re-installed the latest drivers for the graphics card, but haven't done anything for the CPU or motherboard yet. I can try that when I get home from work.

I can post logs from the event viewer if you give me some quick directions on how to get them.

Just found this real quick:

Quote:
To get started, click on the Vista Start button, then in the 'Start Search' box type just three letters: eve. Observe how the larger dialog box displays: 'Programs' and underneath: 'Event Viewer'. Click on 'Event Viewer'.

Have you turned off Access Control in Vista?

The second error with video stopping at main menu sounds like a video drivers or codecs issue.

Aside from being annoying I don't think that Access Control prevents you from playing any of these titles. It might be the thing to try when all else fails though.

The quick search I did mentioned that no one had to jump through any hoops to get these working.

Perhaps checking an official game forum for one of these more recent games may have other people with similar occurrences.

That's the first thing people on other forums told me to try. It didn't help, but apparently it's a good thing to have off anyways (from what I've read).

I know the video drivers are up to date as I've installed and re-installed them straight from nvidia's website. I don't know about the codecs though.

I'll get logs from the event viewer when I get home from work.

The Oblivion forum had me try a couple of things: UAC and install in safe mode.

There was apparently a conflict when installing with Nero, but I tried the fix and even uninstalling Nero (which works fine) to no avail.

From a quick google search it seems like people get this problem when uninstalling programs and rarely installing them like me. The google results just end up having people making a forum post asking for help and no one really giving a solution.

clear your event viewer, then try to do one of the setup.exe then post a screenshot of your app log along with any events that you can see that seem peculiar.

That is very basic thing that should work no problem. Initial thoughts would be the setup program isnt in the root folder of the file or something - I have heard of vista issues like this where it doesnt properly read some of the shortcut information properly (example, make sure setup file is in the same folder as the install files).

After we get that to work then we can diagnose the video issue. Setup wont have to do with drivers, its an application layer, no direct hardware interaction.

What happnes when you install something like DivX or Adobe Reader etc? Same issues?

Very strange - I have had no issues with Civ4, TotalWar Shogun, Medivil, Rome, Company of Heroes, GalCiv, etc installing them onto Vista

DivX was bundled on the graphics card's software CD and that installed without a hitch.

I'll try Adobe later although it did end up getting installed from a different CD during the inital set-up.

Just wanted to quickly ask, and I'm not suggesting that you are a pirate...Are you installing these from the DVDs/CDs or from some kind of cracked executable or disk image?

Regular CD/DVDs.

Is there anything in the "details" tab in the window at the bottom?

Sadly those screens aren't really providing any discernable information other than some error codes. It's obvious the problem is that installshield is not working properly. I'm afraid I don't have enough Vista experience to help you but I've never heard of all games not installing properly.

So other software installs right? Just games don't install?

Did you already try turfing the UAC?

Edit: Sorry, at this point I'm just shooting out things to try. The screenshots do seem to point at a general problem that InstallShield is having trying to install, but it could be that "Setup.exe has stopped working" could also be a catch-all exception for when an installation doesn't work. Since the games you are trying to install are supposed to be Vista compatible I have a feeling it might be something to do with an InstallShield problem (as Hack&Lube mentioned) as opposed to a problem with a particular game installation. I will poke around the InstallShield website to maybe see if there is something there that can help.
