Ever passed on your dream job?
I just had to. New home sales... I've wanted to get in to the industry for the past 3 years. I finally got an offer and I had to refuse because I have a substantial down payment on a vacation that conflicts with the job.
I've been waiting for this offer for what seems like forever. I had to give it up because the commission structure is too risky for the amount I need to save for this trip. This friggin sucks.

Considering a dream job in national defense, and going through the motions of getting it. However, it's a drawn out process, and if I don't get it by later this year, I'm going back to Asia to travel again. Does that count?

I had to think long and hard about it, and I ended up giving the company an opportunity to negotiate a more stable contract but they couldn't flex.

I've never passed on my dream job. No one has offered me a job screwing supermodels yet.

at age 19 I had applied for the Calgary Police Service. made it through all the exams and failed the eye exam. now with corrective lasik surgery that would have been a non issue at the time.
recently passed up an opportunity to join a company. starting salary was 120K plus bonuses. I pass it up due to my commitment to the new venture my partner and I are embarking on.
these things never come up when you want them to.
thats the way it goes. don't dwell on what could have been.

Sounds to me like the problem was the potential lack of compensation. Are you sure this is what you would define as a "dream job" if they aren't willing to pay you?
Yeah, some commision jobs can be fun; until you start having to price out the difference between brand name and generic Kraft Dinner.

Or wether you'll have enough to pay the rent that month.

Yeah... I have salesman in my blood, and I know I will be successful in that or almost any field of sales, but it takes time to build up company specific knowledge and I would be in a "training" position for the first 3 months. That's where the major problem was, but you're probably right for this juncture of my life.

I've always been fascinated by the industry, and I love the whole dynamic of sales. I find it to be very interesting that there are so many evolving facets of it too; changing styles, architectures, innovative technologies such as greener homes, and I just get a rush when I go through the sales process. I love walking through show homes for fun and the whole industry is just extremely interesting to me.

I'm going for it. I'm actually pursuing my dream job as we speak. I'm on the route to get my MBA in Sports Administration in the United States in 2009, and then hopefully get on with an internship with the NHL or with FIFA.

I'm in the process of starting a political dream job right now. We'll see how it works out. It's either that or a land admin job.

Sign of the times, having to turn down a '120k plus bonuses' position. What an economy we live in!
I can only dream of that type of money.

Too bad. Hopefully another / better oppertunity comes along for you.
I'm in the middle of a similar situation, jobs for new grads arn't as hot as last year and I'm deciding whether I should apply to jobs that arn't directly what I want to do vs waiting on jobs I do want to do - work in Silicon Valley or Buffalo. (In my field, not the dream job of being a SI Swimsuite photographer or playing pro sports or one of those travel book writers)
