Windows Home Server
I have been waiting for this to come out for awhile...and now that we are through Christmas I will have some time to devote to acquiring/building and setting up.
is anyone running this on CP? How is it?
Any thoughts on buying a prebuilt vs building one? I could build one but just wondering if anyone has any experience with a prebuilt one from HP or someone else?
Thanks!

I was thinking about it but for what I use it for (shared file storage and music sharing for the house), I just went with a small NAS device. I had a server, but the NAS uses a LOT less power.

I've heard really good things about the HP ones. As a huge Mac fanboy, I'm a little jealous of Home Server. Comon AppleTV 2.0
....waits for Macworld.

thanks guys. hey photon what sort of storage do you get on your NAS? cost wise...is it similar to HDD costs plus a box? so the other costs for a headless server would really be the software?
i did look at NAS as an option...but i think that the home server might be easier for the family to use...

Yeah I've got a DNS-323 ( http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=509) so it's just an enclosure, then buy a couple of hard drives (I wanted to be able to mirror them to protect the data from hard drive failure).
Right now it's 320GB, but I'm not doing much video so that's tons of storage (all shared files, all PC backups are autoscheduled and go up to the NAS).
Costs would be higher for a Windows server of course, but as you say it might be easier to use and it would have more features.

Damn Photon, you got me tempted to get me one of those now. If only the Xbox360 could play normal video formats...

It now does.

It supports Windows Home Server as well. Along with USB drives and WMP11 streaming, you can also stream DivX/XviD from Windows Home Server too. It makes sense to store all your videos on here, since videos are big and WHS has a lot of room. QED.

Plus there's some good hacking going on with the DNS-323:

Though I don't have anything done to mine yet.

What kind of specs would you need for a windows home server? I have an old Pentium III kicking around.

Ars Technica did a pretty solid review when this was released.
