It's pricey as hell because it's one of those train places... and quite honestly it's not very good. I'm sure Sushi Ichiban on Bow Trail and 37th street is better. Never been there yet though..

Go to 17th avenue there are a few places down there that are good. Marda Loop has Globefish i think, it's ok. Everyone has different tastes though.

The main thing that I can say for it is that it is a good place to take kids because the self-serve bar operates off of a large scale model train, and there are always chicken strips on the self serve bar. Fast and fun makes it kid friendly. Watch your selections carefully, though, or you could end up spending $20 on lunch before you know it. I'd say Misato on Scirocco is generally better, it's about a 5 minute drive from there. If you want the self-serve type thing, Kinjo on McLeod trail also beats Richmond Station. Both Kinjo and Richmond are good places to go if you want a speedy lunch.

I almost forgot about Ichiban... I'd only been there once and had a bad experience.
Also, if you go to John Gilchrists's web site, he has a review of Richmond Station. I think he gave it a 7.

Sakana Grill, Tokyo 17, Hanna Sushi and Misato are some of the best places to go for Sushi in the city...followed by Sumo Lounge & Sushi BBQ Inn(despite popular opinion on this place)

Just go a little further down Richmond rd. and turn right into the strip mall at 37th street. Couple stalls down from the Royal Bank there is a restaurant named 'Momoyama'. Looks terrible, poor decorations but the chef is talented, a great place for sushi.
Misato is also very good.

Agree that the train one sucks, and Misato is pretty good (for Calgary sushi at least)

nothing new to add, train place not so good but fun for kids, Misato likely best Westside option (although I'd be interested to hear about others)

If you're really brave, they have in-store made sushi at the following locations, but the thought of eating it makes me queasy:
- Edo at Westhills
- Safeway at Westhills
- CoOp in West Springs

I'm kind of a sushi snob...though that has only come recently. Sushi Ichiban is a good place to go if you are going for all you can eat. If not taking advantage of that, I'd steer clear of this restaurant. The exact same goes for Sushi BBQ inn. Wasabi on 16th ave I've also found pretty poor.
If you want very tasty sushi, the two I would recommend would be Wa's which is right across from the old regal beagle on center street, or globefish on 14th. Wa's is by far my favorite though. I've heard good things about sushi towa in the south, but I have not made it there yet and they have had an ownership change in the last year or two and might not be as good as they used to be.
I realize these probably aren't close by which is what you might have wanted, I just had to chime in with my opinion because...well...I freaking love sushi.

My current favourite is Midori on 17th.. They have some very interesting rolls like the dragon roll.. However I'm very picky with Sushi I pretty much stick with vegetarian stuff because I hate seafood, yet love veggie sushi.. The gf likes the crazy rolls though..

Whatever you do, avoid Sushi BBQ in. The worst food quality. The crappiest service and they are rude as heck. Ask anyone!

I grew up in Calgary/Edmonton, lived in Arizona, California and Ohio and have recently moved to Vancouver for a few months. The sushi here is absolutely second to none.
In fact, I was sitting in a cafe with a Japanese waitress who was eager to practice her english. She's from Hiroshima and has lived in Vancouver for 3 months. She told me that the sushi here is better than back in Japan - fresher and high quality fish.
So, sushi lovers... next time youre in Van-city, check it out. All you can eat and especially the little hole-in-the-wall places that have hilarious names (Hello Sushi, Fun Sushi Time, etc...) are great. And cheap.

I don't even try to compare Calgary Sushi to Vancouver as it is no contest and probably not even a fair comparison. The fish is fresh and the competition is intense. If you're ever in North Vancouver, take a walk all the way up Lonsdale street. The businesses alternate sushi-bakery-coffee bar-salon-sushi-bakery-coffee-salon (with the occasional gelato joint thrown in there); and it goes on like this for several miles up hill.
Man, I miss that place.
