Default Law firm says blogger stole Stelmach's personality

Dave Cournoyer registered edstelmach.ca and had it redirected to his own blog for a while. It then pointed to a biography of our last So-Cred Premier.

Quote:
A 24-year-old university student, Cournoyer has been accused in a letter from a Calgary law firm representing Stelmach of misappropriating the premier's personality for his own gain.

"If Ed Stelmach is missing a personality, then I don't know where it is, but I sure don't have it," Cournoyer joked. "I think it's a little drastic and heavy-handed and it says a lot to me that their first reaction was to hire a high-priced lawyer to go after me."

Well Mr. Premier, you should have registered the site if you didn't want anyone else to use it then.

If I were Stelmech, I'd tell him to keep it.

It sounds heavy handed. He should give it to Ed, but there is no reason to get litigious about it unless the guy starts acting like jerk.

Does Stelmach not pay any attention to federal politics?

Back in 2005, Don Boudria, a former Liberal MP from Glengaryy-Prescott-Russell, caused a stir in the House of Commons because a group of conservative Christian activists had registered the donboudria.ca domain and were using it to promote their anti-gay marriage agenda. Jason Kenney, the Conservative MP from Calgary Southeast, rose in the Commons and declared that Boudria was ignorant of the web if he failed to register his own domain name.

Unfortunately for Kenney, he had neglected to register jasonkenney.org, which immediately became the property of Rick Mercer. His first act of owner of the domain was to make it forward to the site of the Marxist-Leninist Party of Canada. :P

That was over two years ago; there's no excuse for any politician not to have registered their own domain by now.

Ed should have approached the guy about it first before going in with the lawyers... and the wording of it could have gone way better.

That said, if this guy had registered edstelmachsucks.ca I'd have no problem with it, but that it's just edstelmach.ca that he registered. I think there's a reasonable enough chance they'd win a court case to say it's cybersquatting.

As an aside, Levant was on the radio this morning about this, and I found it funny that he was giving his lawyery opinion, but a few minutes of research shows that he didn't know the half of it. Ezra said Ed owned .com, .net and .org of his domains, which would make it even MORE of a case of cybersquatting.. however he doesn't own the .com domain, and the other two were registered YESTERDAY.

Where do we find these morons, and why do we elect them?

If there was anything of Ed Stelmach's that I would have guessed was not worth stealing.... it would have been his personality.

You could have bought a membership and voted like everyone else.

I want Klein back. This province needs more character than Stelmach can provide.

What if I didn't want to vote for that party at all?

These election-less leadership changes are a poor showing for our democracy IMO considering how much power the leader of a party has.

I picked up a PC membership to vote for the premier. With my voting, I helped get Stelmach in power. I am really disappointed in how he has done and I seem to have less respect for him month after month. At this point, I can`t imagine that I will vote conservative in the next election.

Stelmach is an idiot! I wouldn't give the rightfully purchased domain name over without a fight. I'm sure he could find a guy to handle this pro bono in the meantime!

Jim Dinning will be the next Premier of Alberta if he would just switch over to the Liberal party. It worked pretty good for Klein.

Can't believe leadership races are ran like that. The useless quiet guy goes up the middle for the win? hehe

its heavy handed and extremely not politically astute to make this demand and then have the guy go public.

amazingly...it took months for stelmach's advisors to even think of this site.

to quote homer..."welcome to the internet my friend...how can i help you."

whomever is providing stelmach with advice is doing it poorly.
