Default Stuck in Honduras

Hey guys,

So I am stuck in Roatan, Honduras. The whole family decided to spend the holidays on a tropical island. It has been an awesome trip with great weather until the last few days. So here we sit on the day of our scheduled departure.

We waited at the Roatan airport for 6 hours, found out our flight was cancelled due to weather. Now we are in limbo waiting to find out when the next flight out of here will be.

To add to it we were scheduled to fly out of Houston tomorrow with a different airline.

I know there are a few travel gurus around here. Any idea where we sit with regard to the flight we will likely miss tomorrow? Are we SOL? Does the airline we were scheduled to fly with today have any responsibilities?

Nice place to be stranded I guess, but we were all ready to head home and the weather is not the best anymore.

Good to see the Flames are on a roll though.

Don't believe they are responsible for your connection in Houston since this is out of their control, ie act of god

If you are flying out of Houston with a major airline, I would expect them to find you a standby flight either for free or for a small admin charge. If you are flying with a charter from Houston, then you might be SOL.

I would try to get in touch with your Houston based airline ASAP, as they might be able to get your file updated to make things easier to arrange once you finally get your flight over there.

Yeah, I figure we are hooped on the connection from Houston.

We were scheduled to fly out of here with a central american airline (TACA airlines).

We are waiting to see what they can do for us as their scheduled flights out of roatan are only on Saturdays.

Considering what winter is like in Canada, I'd be tempted to just stay in Honduras. Maybe its a sign from God. "Stay where its warm".

Yeah, I saw that link.

Any further details on that? I read it was "near" Langdon and also "in" Langdon.

If its near Langdon, that describes a large area.

Still strange to hear it. But it is getting pretty large, so I guess this kind of thing is just a matter of time.

It is still warm here in Roatan, but the seas are pretty rough. Good for body surfing and filling your mouth with sand and salt water.

I would think it depends on how you booked the trip.

If you booked them as two separate trips (i.e. Calgary to Houston return and Houston to Roatan return), they probably won't do anything to assist you in fixing your flight home. Since you haven't missed your connecting flight yet, you should be able to contact Continental (I assume that's who you're flying out of Houston with), and reschedule your flight (probably paying a rebooking fee).

If you booked as a single trip and they scheduled you on two different airlines, contact whichever company you booked the trip through and they should do something to accommodate you.

If you used a travel agent, get in touch with your TA and let her (most TAs are female, but if yours wasn't, substitute the correct gender pronouns) handle things since that's one of the reasons you book through a TA. Also, if you have travel insurance, get in touch with the insurance company to find out what you have to do to make everything work out.

Well the Bay Islands of Honduras (roatan is the largest) are fast becoming a resort area. We booked a few homes on the beach in West Bay, Roatan.

Amazing coral reef surrounding the island provides beautiful snorkeling and diving. Rated by many as one of the top 5 scuba destinations in the world.

We are bordered by a few traditional "all inclusive" resorts. (Henry Morgans, Mayan Princess, etc.)

Prices tend to be slightly less than Mexico, but the main reason we chose it was due to the calm beaches and smaller crowds. Has all the sights of mexico plus more. I would highly recommend this area to anyone looking for an alternative to Mexico.

There is a cold front going through there. We just got back from a cruise and we couldnt stop in Jamaica because of it and then we spent 2 rough days at sea coming back from Jamaica to Fort Lauderdale.

Don't go to the Bay islands, never go to the Bay Islands, don't even think about them, just stay away.

(I want to keep them to myself, excellent wall diving in Roatan.)

Contacting Continental is the best bet, they should be able to help you out with a flight change.
