Advice Needed - Intractable Pain
Hey CP.
My dad has been experiencing a wrist problem recently and this morning is in very serious and intractable pain and can't sleep or do much else.
I'm not sure if going to the hospital would do anything but I'm pretty sure going to a doctor definitely won't. Any advice?

tell him to use more lube next time...
in all seriousness though hospital and you might wait for 4 hours and at the doctor he'll just refer you to someone else and then you'll wait 2 weeks for the appointment.
id personally go to the doctor first at least he might be able to give your dad some painkillers or antiinflamatories depending on what kind of injury.
you might even want to spend some money on a wrist brace if needed. you can get them at your local drug store for about $15-30.

Umm ... go to a doctor?
Could be a fracture, could be infected ... all of which can be figured out by some Xrays and a knowledgable eye.

I would suggest that for the next little while he use the techinique known as "The Stranger" and perform using his opposite hand. This will allow his good hand time to rest and recouperate. It will probably take a little bit of practice and getting used to, but once mastered, The Stranger allows a person to move on and learn more complicated techiniques such as The Switch-Up or The Numb-er.

No offense guys, but not really the time for jokes. Kinda hard seeing my dad in agony.
Thanks flip (for the second part of your post) and Flames89 and thanks in advance to anyone else.

A doctor is a pretty common sense solution for pain. If you're posting on CP for answers, you're of course gonna get jokes and some stupid answers

Call the Healthlink line. They are a pretty good resource on the best way to get started.

This happens to me from time to time....I get pain in my wrists and can't bend them forward or back without crying. I've been to about 4 doctors and got about 6 different opinions varying from arthritis to gout to tendonitis, and have tried medication for all of those different ailments, along with a battery of blood tests.
The only thing that helps me is an anti-inflammatory called indomethacin (sp?). Within a day of taking it the pain clears up. Unfortunately you have to go to a doctor for a prescription.

It could be gout, that can cause crazy levels of joint pain. If that's what it is they can prescribe an anti-inflammatory
The only way to know is to go to a doctor, not sure why you think going to a doctor won't help.

Ice and Advil would probably help until you get to a doctor.

a doctor might not be able to do anything on the spot but i can guarantee you its a better idea than trying to have a bunch of hockey fans diagnose your father over the internet.

As most rural residents know, and many sneaky Calgary people know, you can get into emergency care almost immediately in High River and Turner Valley.
There is also a newer emergency clinic now open in Okotoks which I've used myself with a genuine doctor hanging around.
It might be something like this:

Anyway, if you want to avoid a lineup go south. You'll probably have better luck.

I had such severe pain a few weeks ago, the doctors had no idea what was wrong with me. Started in my ankle feeling like a sprain, (doctors wrongly assumed it was gout), went to my knee and other ankle, and then at one point I woke in such excrutiating pain I could barely get out of bed. It had spread to my wrists, elbows, spine, both knees and ankles. At that point in time they realized it wasn't gout and sent me to a specialist and gave me demerol. (The codeine wasn't strong enough). Turns out I have a condition called sarcoidosis.
Anyway, the point is that your dad just needs to go to the dr. Even the drs I started with had no idea what was wrong with me. Looked like gout, felt like gout, they called it gout. Apparently, pre-menopausal women cannot get gout. It may take a few trips to the Dr. to find out what's wrong, but in the meantime, I'm sure they'll find something to ease his discomfort better than advil.

My body is falling apart. But other than my elbow, everything seems to be back to normal in a day or two.

You're getting the jokes because your position seems ridiculous & unfathomable to most people. Maybe you could explain why you think a hospital or doctor definetely wouldn't help?
What other positive solutions could we offer you except to get a proper medical diagnosis and help? Take your dad to a neighbourhood free medical clinic right away.

As an almost-doctor, I'll venture to guess it's a torn ligament. Lots (13) of ligaments in the wrist. X-Rays or an MRI extremely helpful to determine what the problem is.
