Default I just spent my first few bucks with 5% GST

Did anyone else notice the drop in GST? I wonder how long Tim Hortons takes to raise their prices 1% so we can all have the convenience of rounded prices? I give them a month.

I think they raised them a couple of months ago. I suppose that could be attributed to the decrease in the GST.

I bought a tv from future shop during the boxing week sale and they were already offering the 1% drop. I spent 1700$ and saved 17 bucks. It's as though Harper gave me the gift of half a bluray disc.

For those who take public transport to and from Flames games, just think of the money you are saving on 5% GST coffee as going towards the Calgary Transit fare increase effective today.

I forgot about it, and it took me a second to realize why my large coffee was $1.54 today. Oh boy a whole penny!

Tim's Camps will be doing well this year (at least until they raise their prices by a cent)

If you count the other 1% that he cut, you saved $34.

Interestingly, that's about how much property taxes go up when the city raises their rates, yet people bitch and moan to no end.

Go figure.

I ordered a Yukon in November and I think I will save about $530 on the GST when it comes in this month. Can't complain about that.

Still think it's moronic to lower GST when the consumer benefit truly stems from lowered income tax.

But I mean, GST is more sexy

ya i'd be in favor of raising the GST to an easy math number like 10% and then give a big cut to the income tax. i'd notice the extra couple hundred bucks on my paycheck a lot more than a few cents on my groceries

Good economics. Bad politics. While you're technically right, it ain't happenin' any time soon.

Wow! GST is only 5% now? How things chanve when you're out of the country.
All the more reason for me to come back, that is if buying pretty much anything wasn't way way cheaper here to begin with.

Yeah, I took the bus downtown today and it was $2.50 (up from $2.25). The penny I saved on my large tea doesn't seem so marvelous now.

I think it's foolish that people aren't looking at the big picture. Yes, one percent cuts here and there for a sales tax might not be much but the goal is not to reap savings from these cuts alone. The larger goal is to eliminate the entire sales tax; all seven percent through a series of small and manageable cuts. We shouldn't be judging these fiscal policy measures individually but rather as a whole sum.

That would be pure brilliance. Eliminate the only "fair" tax.
