Default Protto's Dumb Question: Mall Gift Cards

Has anyone ever tried to use a mall gift card at a different mall? I know that Cadilac Fairview (Market, Chinook) offers their own gift card. I work at Chinook, but have a Sunridge card. From my understanding it's like a pre-paid credit card that can't be re-loaded, but I've never heard of anyone using it, or being denied at a different mall.

Realistically, I should be using it at Sunridge, but I'm rarely at that mall.

Has anyone else tried one mall's gift card at a different mall?

Most have magnetic stripes now, and the computers probably won't accept them if they aren't coded for that mall/chain.

Usually if a gift card is bought from a chain, it is usable in any store in that chain. I buy gift cards for my nieces and nephews in other provinces specifically because of that. But I always ask before I buy a gift card and send it elsewhere, just to be on the safe side.

Safeway sells gift cards now too for other stores, not other Safeway stores but other retail stores. I mean, it is activated by Safeway but you don't spend your money at Safeway.

I was under the impression that they only work for the one mall, unless it specifically says on it "valid at all cadillac fairview malls in Canada" for example. If Sunridge is owned by Ivanhoe Cambridge (I dunno who owns it), you might be able to use it at Southcentre... or at least get it converted there.

I think it is the opposite. If it is redeemable at only one location, it is usually marked that way. I know that one time we received a gift certificate to Caesar's Steak House and it was specifically stipulated as being the downtown location only.

Ok, maybe I have misunderstood what you have asked. Are you talking specifically about a mall certificate that would be good for every store within that mall? Or are you talking about a gift certificate from a store in the mall? My answer pertained to the latter, I am not sure about the former.

I dunno, when I used the Cadillac Fairview card at Market Mall... ur bill will show up as if you were using a Master Card, just that its preloaded

Now, I don't know if it would actually work in Sunridge... something tells me no.

Doesn't sound like it is good anywhere but Sunridge
