UFC 79 Roundup
Liddell & St. Pierre with the victories tonight. I missed the fights because I chose to watch the Flames instead but by the sounds of it both were good stand up fights. Matt Hughes, turning his back with 5 seconds left in the second looses with a verbal submission. The Liddell & Silva affair was a slugfest, I really wish I could have seen this one. Silva ends up with nasty cut over his right eye. Can't wait for highlights on this.

GSP is definitely back in fine form. It wasn't a stand-up fight by any means. He threw Hughes to the ground and out-wrestled him. Dominated him on the ground. I think Serra's in big trouble in the rematch.
Liddell/Silva was a great stand-up battle. Liddell looked really, really gassed at the end. He kept looking at the clock and was seriously out of breath during the interview. Not sure he has it in him to go five rounds again but he still has that knock-out power.
The other fights did little to excite. Money well spent though for the two main events.

Suck it Hughes.
I was just going to drag up the mighty MMA thread, but this will do.
The Liddell fight sounded pretty good.

I will echo.... GSP owned the all American wrestler Hughes on the ground. I think Hughes doesn't have his heart in it any more and knows is past his prime.
The Liddel fight was a slugfest. So much so that the Iceman gassed himself trying to put Silva away. I never saw that one going the distance but it met the pre-fight hype in my opinion.

Silva wasn't exactly a fresh daisy himself. His mouth was gaping and he was swinging lazily. Very good fight. Very good card, too, with the exception of the heavyweight bout

Whenever you are avoiding something like this.. totally avoid it.
Don't wander into a thread titled UFC 79 when you are avoiding what happened in it.

Good card. One of the best "fight nights" I've seen in a while. All the fights were good except for the heavyweight tilt right before the Liddell - Silva fight.
I'm glad Melvin Guillard got owned again. I can't stand that guy.
Chuck and Silva was a great slugfest. That's the kind of fight that makes it worth the $$$ to purchase the PPV. After that fight was over I think the thing I came out most impressed with was Silvas chin. He took repeated haymakers from Chuck and just wiped the blood out of his eyes and kept on swinging back. It's a shame I've only seen a few of his fights through out his career.
GSP was a beast. I don't think Hughes even caused GSP any discomfort let alone hurting him. If Hughes had made it out of that round I would have given GSP a 10-8 victory in each of the 1st 2 rounds. Those "frog splashes" were golden. I think Hughes is done and GSP is going to stomp Serra whenever he gets back. I hope GSP comes out to "The Big Payback" in that fight like Lennox Lewis did when he crushed Rahman in thier rematch.

Does anyone know what the UFC deal is in terms of TV highlights?
I know it was really restricted before, and then for a while it seemed they had loosened up and you would see highlights on Sportsnet (etc), but now there is nothing again??
I know they are really aggressive in cracking down on YouTube and the such...

For he GSP fans, I found this cool video that is basically a long (about 40 mins) career retrospective of our favorite french Canadian. Includes highlites of all fights (including losses to Hughes & Serra) up to and including the Koschek fight. Music includes Metallica to Wu-Tang Clan and everything in between. First 2 minutes are just stills and then the action gets going.

Don't let the USA chants fool you, GSP was the crowd favourite. Very nice to see.
