Lakota Indians Announce Seperation from U.S.
Quote:
The Lakota Indians, who gave the world legendary warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from treaties with the United States, leaders said Wednesday.
"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us," long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means told a handful of reporters and a delegation from the Bolivian embassy, gathered in a church in a run-down neighborhood of Washington for a news conference.

In all seriousness though, how can this happen? There is no way they can support for themselves. Who will be these people doctors? How will they get advance education to become doctors?
out of country tuition is expensive!
Also what about working in the states, will they need work visas?
If they plan on being their own country, with their own drivers license etc. then there will be borders to go in and especially out of their "country" (yeah I put quotes there). If they are complaining that they were put on reserves before, they just strangled held themselves onto them.

Had an idea!

There is no possible way this could work.
They can't properly support themselves WITH government help, but they'll be able to do it as their own country?
...all political grandstanding.

So one party can unilaterally back out of a treaty? Interesting....

I like how they had witnesses there, to make it legit. a delegation from the Bolivian embassy is definitely going to stand up for you against the united states government.

One theory I've always maintained is that if a treaty nation decides to hold an illegal blockade, or some such to "protest" some slight, that the government simply declare them in violation of said treaty, and tear it up. Say goodbye to your special status.
Of course, we all know how well that would work for the government...
As much as this is obviously nothing more than futile grandstanding, I have to say I respect the Lakotas far, far more for using this tactic than I would some of our native tribes who prefer to risk the lives of innocent people while sabotaging train tracks, etc.
That said, I fully expect to see this headline on CNN shortly: "In response to the declaration of independence by the Lakota Indian tribe, a US State Department spokseman was quoted as saying 'ROFL'."

The treaty might be the only thing they have in writing that actually confirms they own the land at all.

Funny you say that.
In Canada, Native land rights are in the Constitution but that's pretty much the only reason they have "elevated status". It's not because they were here first. The courts have said, the only reason they have rights at all (regarding land) is because they are recognized by our legal system.
Hopefully it's not the same in the states.
