Default Resume writers?

I'm thinking of applying for another job, and it is very important to me that my resume is tailor made to suit this position - I think I have everything they are looking for.

Basically, I dont want to blow it by sending in a poor resume.

Does anyone know of an outfit that will review and rewrite or custom work your resume to fit a position?

Thanks!

I can't suggest any resume reviewers/writers but I can put some tips I've found successful:
  • Don't put an objective. It's lame.
  • Don't use the Word Resume template.
  • If you're applying for a technical position, place your skills higher then your work experience.
  • Leave off experience and skills that will not have any bearing on the job you are applying for.
  • Only include skills that you can validate in an interview.
  • Try to keep your resume to one page. If you can't, ensure the most attractive parts are on the first page. Chances are, they aren't going to look at your second page unless the first one is compelling.
  • Use direct language, avoid passive voice. I like to summarize my skills using small sentences that are descriptive ("Developed Web Based CMS using PHP", for instance).
  • Make sure that you avoid ALL exaggerative language.
  • Write a compelling cover letter. This is VERY important.
I hope some people more experienced then me comment. I'd be interested in seeing what other people think about resumes.

They offer this service at Mount Royal, and I assume at U of C as well. Its free for students but they might allow you to pay for their time, or they might at least be able to suggest some other places that could do it for you.

Don't use your "sexymofo69@yahoo.com" address on your resume.

It amazes me how many resumes I see from twits who use those kind of emails.

llamas advice is all good too.

Oh, I thought of one more tip:

Use standard 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper. Resumes get stacked. If yours doesn't stack, a lot people will just toss it out. And use proper portrait orientation.

Basically, if you're gonna be creative and different, you had better do it right. And doing that right with a resume is nearly impossible.

I used to be in a hiring position and know what sells (to the person doing the hiring) and what doesn't. If you want to email it to me, send me a PM with your email address. I'll contact you and I'd be happy to look at it for you.
