I need help in buying an air compressor for my dad. He will mainly use it for woodworking and upholstering chairs. So the tools that he would need would be a brad nailer and stapler.

I have no idea what to look for. I keep on seeing that Mastercraft model on the Canadian Tire commercials. Is that one any good?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

oooooooooohhhhhhh aaahhhhhhhhh

Sorry i am just preparing for the scenes at calgarypuck when you pull out that Motomaster 3000 Air compressor.....

does it seem odd to you that canadian tire man doesn't have canadian tire child anymore (Jack Storm vs. the Mummy..... awesome) I think that the kid is dead.....
yup I am going to hell.

But seriously motomaster has a great warrenty, but their products are known to break down, but at least you get a new one right away,

I believe a brad nailer needs at least 30 psi, but other tools need at least 90psi. Come to think of it, I think an upholstery stapler needs 30 also, but these can vary in different manufacturers. A compressor capable of at least 90psi would offer better use for other tools and things like filling tires in the future.

Looking at a few manufacturers, it seems that brad nailers range from 50-110 psi for a 2". Does he have a nailer already?

Oil-free and non-lubricated compressors may be cheaper, but they won't last as long as an oiled one.

If all he is going to use it for is nailing and stapling, or otherwise very sporadic use, then a 1.5 hp compressor with about a 3-4 gal tank would be sufficient. There are two main styles, a pancake or a hot-dog. Pancake is a squished spherical tank with the compressor on top of it, and the hot-dog is the long cylinder style. If he wants to save room, a pancake style would be better.

If noise is a problem, there are some with lower RPM's which are quieter and last longer than a regular compressor. A slower one goes around 1700 rpm.

Stay away from Mastercraft, and go to a real hardware store. Don't get the cheapest one, as the "you get what you pay for" saying is true.

Porter Cable sells compessor and brad nailer combo. I saw them on sale for around $299.00.

Do you have TSC in Calgary? My buddy bought a really nice compressor from TSC here in Ontario. Worth a look. Maybe check out an auction as well. Lots of things like compressors and air tools come up for auction as auto shops and such are always going out of business.

Although this may not be what you’re asking AvengeR but none the less may be worth checking out and that’s forgetting about the compressor, brad nailer and stapler and look into the Pasload nailers out there. They run on fuel cells and there’s no need for a compressor and cord.

If he may be using the compressor for other things as well then maybe it’s not something for right now, but if its likely to be used just for nailing then I’ll go with the Pasloads.

Although I mainly use a framing nailer for my work, I used to carry around a compressor and nailer for years but not any more, after I found these things I now have 2 Framing nailers and 1 finishing nailer and I would never go back to a compressor… they are a dream come true.

Cordless Framing Nailers
Paslode Cordless 30° Framing Nailer

Cordless Finish Nailers
Paslode Cordless 16 Gauge Straight Finish Nailer
Paslode Cordless 16 Gauge Angled Finish Nailer
Paslode Cordless 18 Gauge Finish Nailer

Cordless Staplers
Paslode Cordless 16 Gauge Utility Stapler

Best deal you can get. Comes with an air hose too I believe. My boss was telling me about that the other day and he said it's the best deal he's seen for a compressor.

Just read that the Porter Cable model above is oil-free. Should i avoid oil-free models?
