Actually, thats sort of right.
The 40 Gig is the "newer" model of PS3's, there cheaper, but come at a price, which might be somewhat of a concern to you. That is, they don't support any PS2 backwards compatibility. Sony wanted to get the models out cheaper, and took out the Emotion Engine used in the PS2, thus no BC. Though its worth noting that it does support BC with PS1 games(All versions of the PS3 support BC with PS1). The 40 gigs are also somewhat rumored to have slightly more efficient chips in them, and run quieter.
The 80 gig is essentially the exact same, but has obviously a larger HD, and limited BC with Ps2. That means that while most PS2 games will work, they may have some problems in them, IE a few graphical glitches and bugs, as its emulated, and thus alot of the games wont work too well.
Finally, Sony originally came out with 60 gig model, but it has thus been discontinued. You may find a few at stores that haven't sold out of them, but as of now, Sony is no longer making them. Many consider it the "Best" deal, if you BC means anything to you. It has the Emotion Engine chip from the original PS2, so it has essentially 100% compatibility with all PS2 games, and most of them run flawlessly.
