Leafs and Canes swing a deal
Toronto and Carolina were working on a deal all week and it was finally finished on Saturday morning. Heading to Carolina are young goalie Pascal Leclaire and one of the Leafs best prospects, Ryan Parent. Coming back to Toronto are Mattias Norstrom and backup goalie John Grahame, plus some cash.
The Leafs are pretty happy with the way things have gone this season so a decision was made to look for upgrades and see if we can make the current roster better. That was possible here because the Canes were in need of a goalie with potential to become a starter soon, and luckily we had that kind of guy and were able to move him without downgrading our goaltending for this season.
The main improvement here is getting Norstrom. He's one of the more solid defenders around. On top of being great defensively, he's durable, disciplined, and very experienced. We think he'll bring a lot of stability to the blue line.
As far as John Grahame, he'll simply take Leclaire's seat at the end of the bench. Obviously Leclaire is much more valuable, but as far as this season goes they're basically a wash. It would have been nice to keep Leclaire around because he and Lundqvist would have developed into an excellent tandem in net. But for this season his trade value was much higher than the value he could add on the ice.
And obviously Parent moves south as well. We got him from Dallas this past summer and it was kind of tough to give him up. Not only was he one of our top prospects, but he's closer to the NHL than are other top guys.

For this year, Toronto does a good job in improving their club for a run. Nice work in getting Norstrom.
For the future, Carolina wins easily. Nice work in getting Leclaire and Parent.

Canes get a lot of youth which is exactly what they wanted. PAscal has been on fire in the NHL this year and should have a nice rating next season if he can perform at a decent level the rest of the year (he has 5 SO already doesnt he??)
Norstrom will be a solid addition to a cup contender and an upgrade of that price obviously comes at a high value.
Helps the leafs right now which they want, but going forward Canes win hands down.

Yup solid deal for Carolina here.
I like the addition of Leclaire a lot.
Remember when Noreena was supposed to be the "next thing" here in the CPHL this summer?

Yep he has played awesome as well, but if I had to vote for the Vezina based on today's stat's and results. Pascal wins as he has Lundquivst beat in every stat.

Maybe, but give it two more months....IMO anyone can have a hot stretch of 10-15 games. Leclaire is a good pickup for the Canes...not slagging him in the least (I wish I'd never traded him!). But Lundquist is a stud and I'm guessing he could very well play 80 games this year.

This sure looks like Leclaire's 'break-out' season in the NHL, but yea there's no way he continues this pace for a whole season. But even so, he looks like a legit starter now so he sure is a big pickup for Carolina.
Like I said it would have been nice to keep him around for next season but this trade worked out so well for right now that it made sense. When it comes to trading goalies it seems like there's usually limited options because there's so few goalies rated well enough to play.

Yah, I agree. I would of thought the Rangers (NHL) would of been better....
