Killer kid get the max - 10 years
http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/...2af4b7&k=83311
I'm surprised there hasn't been more articles demanding more flexibility for sentencing even young children like adults, when the crime is this horrific.

The only issue with this to me is she clearly isnt going to get a proper education so when she's out in the real world again when she's 24 she's going to be a murder with no real education. Whose gonna to hire her then?

I just have such a hard time believing this girl will ever be right, no matter how much counselling she gets. There's something missing in someone who is capable of such horror, made worse by the fact it's her own family. I would be terrified to live anywhere near her in the future.

I dont understand why she doesnt get the max times three. One for each murder. Unreal that she will be out of jail in 4 years.

Anyone have any numbers on how many people in the Canadian Justice System have murdered someone, served their sentence, were released, and murdered again?

Because Canada dosen't believe in consecutive life terms.
We run everything concurrently, therefore, if your gonna kill one person, you might as well kill 35, because your only going to serve time for one person.

I happen to agree. This young girl is pure evil to me and I don't think any amount of rehab is going to change that. We now have to trust that those doing the rehab and assement of wether she ready for society or not, are accurate.

key words being ready for society or not. She killed 3 people, there is no way she should be allowed to be an active member of society ever again!

This is why I'm in favour of open ended sentencing. Convicts should be released when the Correctional Service decides they've been rehabilitated and are no longer a threat to society. That may be in less time than conventional sentencing, or it may be never. Each individual convict should be dealt with individually and his/her fate depends on his/her state of rehabilitation and level of threat to society. It does not make sense to me that a judge can sit on his or her throne and pass out cookie cutter, one-size-fits-all sentences when in reality each individual convict and case is different.
Also, serving time concurrently for multiple sentences is just plain stupid and demeans the rights of victims. That's something else I'd change if i were king.

She can always get a job in the local Curbside Escort Industry.

I've been told Canada has recently removed its name from a UN resolution which states the death penalty is inhumane and should be outlawed. While I don't think a 12 year old (as this girl was then) should be sentenced to death for anything, it will be interesting to see what the Harper conservatives have in store on the death penalty issue, if anything.

but in this case why should she even be able to be released to resume her life? She ended the lives (or took part in) of three innocent people. You should have to pay for your actions 10, 20 or 30 years is not enough payment in my mind.

Maybe she shouldn't ever be released, and with open ended sentencing that's possible. It certainly isn't with the current method of sentencing. In this particular case though, let's not forget that she was 12 when this happened. If there has ever been a murder case that was this extreme and evil, yet still held out the possiblity for rehabilitation I'd say this is it. Compare this girl to Pickton and I'd be a lot more willing to hold out hope for her rehabilitation than that pig. Same with her boyfriend ... there may be hope for her but not so much for him. At least with open ended sentencing there's the possiblility that criminals of this nature will be kept out of society for as long as they're a threat to society, and with the amount of rehabilitation likely required she would probably be kept out of society for a lot longer than she will under her current sentence.

I believe that the English used to call that kind of sentencing "To the convienience of the Queen" Which meant that you were locked up until the Queen herself decided that you'd had enough.

The scary part is she probably will. From what I heard on the news last night, once she is released the justice wouldn't be doing any follow ups on the young girl

Does anyone else support the death penalty here?
I heard on CNN yesterday that for every one execution, there were 74 less murders. I don't know how you would calculate that stat, but thats what the guy said.
Either way I think it should be brought back.
Delgar, even if the Harper government wants to bring it back there is no way the Libs or any opposition will support it. Canadians are too chicken.

I don't know how you would calculate that stat either. I would say that you probably can't.
Crime/murder rates go up and down for a variety of reasons and not just this one.
Anyway, in this instance we are talking about executing a 14 year-old girl who committed a crime when she was 12 years old. I don't think the state-sanctioned murder of a child is something we really want to get into. Sounds like something the Taleban would be into, but not sane people.
