For those of us who think it is ok to speed.
8 in 10 Canadians speed despite dangers: report
Most Canadians will freely admit to exceeding the speed limit from time to time, but when it comes to just how fast they drive, they underestimate their true speed and delude themselves into thinking their behaviour really isn't that bad, says a new report by Transport Canada.
"People don't see themselves as the problem, they see others as the problem — I'm OK and you're the bad guy," said Raynald Marchand, the general manager of programs for the Canada Safety Council
The report suggests the biggest problem group of drivers is the 30 per cent who speed more than average, and don't believe their speeding translates into a greater risk of an accident, injury or death
"People speed and they don't think [an accident] is going to happen to them. And most times, nothing happens, and they build on that thinking that nothing will ever happen," Marchand said.

Sounds about right. The other people on the road are always the problem - don't they know I really need to get somewhere?

My biggest pet peeve is; SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT!
I don't know what is so hard to understand about this. If you want to go below or close to the speed limit stick in the right lane, if you want to actually pass then make your move in the left lane.

The one thing that we all have in common is that we all have above average driving abilities.

A little OT but its like this guy I work with. Always complaining about Urban Sprawl and how everyone in Calgary should live in Apartment complexes to save the evironment, yet when I asked why he decided to live in McKenzie Town in a 4 bedroom house and work way up in the NE, he said "well I have my own personal reasons for living down there."
All I can do is shake my head.

Most cars have regulators in them. Mine kicks in at 170 km/h. (Or so I've been told. )
I can see the reasons for them not being lower. I've had to execute an emergency maneuver before that brought me up to 150 km/h.

I do agree, but, could you imagine trying to pass a vehicle that's driving 110 kph if yours can only go 120 kph max? I think passing on a busy highway would be extremely dangerous if vehicles couldn't speed. Maybe that has something to do with why a lot of trucks govern out at around 155 kph?
Whenever I've made a quick pass and I look at the speedometer, I'm usually going around 140 kph. Only because I want to be in the opposite lane for the least amount of time possible though, I don't actually carry that speed the whole time I'm traveling.

I really don't think it would help. Take me for example; I have a bit of a lead foot, but it wasn't until somebody asked me when my governer kicked in did I try it out, and not right away either. It took over 3 months until I was alone on a 5 km straight, newly paved, deserted highway with a slight downhill slope. (Slope allows me to see the road ahead of me for miles.) When I found out the governer kicks in at 170, I sorta figured that was probably the fatsest I'd ever want to drive a FWD car; even in an emergency.
However if the governer kicked in at 120 or even 130, I would be buying myself a chip. And there would be places to buy chips, so now you'd have a situation where some cars have chips, and others don't.

That's all well and good until someone rigs a bomb to your speedometer.
How are you gonna jump the gap in the road if you can't it over 120?

I didn't think cars had governers. I've had my 97 Intrepid going 180, and it only stopped there because I didn't want to go any faster. I don't see why there'd be a governer set at 200 kph...seems a little pointless.

Well the same goes for our 01 Grand Prix. I guess it's still 7 years old, but it's not like they never had this technology 7 years ago.

120 would be too low. The max speed limit in some states (like North Dakota) is 75 which is 125 which would mean it would need to probably be at least 135 to enable passing.
There are also situations (like passing on one-lane highways) where you need to go faster in order to avoid a head-on collision and that sort of thing.

Another thing to is the cops really aren't that smart about setting up speed traps, or at least not here in Victoria. They sit in the same spot every day without any change for the last 1 1/2 years I have lived here. So when I go to work on a 90km highway everyday, I go about 110-140km (depending on weather) until I come up to the corner I know they will be, then I take my foot off the pedal and coast. I hit 95-100km by the time I get to where they are going to be....no tickets, no problems.
I am not saying they should move, because it really helps me out when I am late, but they should think about those things. Try mixing it up, don't be on the same stretch of highway move around a little and more people would be caught and I would probably not speed knowning there is a chance I will have to pay a huge fine.

+1. What about driving heavy vehicles? Just like more speed, more mass will cause more damage in an accident. Should people in Hummers be fined? No, because, like speed, excess weight doesn't CAUSE accidents. Inattentive pricks behind the wheel cause accidents.

This belief kills people daily.
Speed Kills. Bad driving kills, but speed does as well. Yes some accidents are caused by driver error, but many are made worse or created all on their own because of speed.
And everyone always thinks it's the other guy that is an idiot.
