Default Man shot to death in SW. Calgary's 28th homicide of the year.

http://calsun.canoe.ca/News/Alberta/...37018-sun.html

I can't believe how many shootings there have been recently.

that pro-rates to about 35 this year. That would be a decrease of 10 from 45 last year and 40 the year before. Small consolation I suppose, but fewer is better

edit: the CPS published two different reports that contradict each other. Homicides in '05 was either 24 or 40; and homicides in '06 was either 26 or 45

I live in North Glenmore Park, so this hits pretty close to home. I drove past the place - still festooned with police tape and the forensic unit out front - this morning.

the real question of security is random acts of violence.

Montreal has a lot of crime but generally it's OC on OC.

The radio this morning said the house was "known to police".

Just for those speculating, this was not a random act of violence, nor was it gang related. Those guessing drugs are probably much closer to the truth.

Police should be releasing information soon I would imagine, these guys are NOT going to get away with it.

The fact that I feel safe enough to post this should imply something to those who can put 2 and 2 together.

We are in the 40's in Wichita, KS...I posted about the alarming murder rate here in late summer.

Wichita is at best 1/2 the size of Calgary and there is absolutely a gang problem here.

I know it has nothing to do with Calgary, but I've long believed Wichita to have a crime rate much higher than cities of comparable size, foreign or domestic.

Yeah, here in the U.S. it's almost like crime rates are in a different category. Calgary gets their 28th and it's followed by hand-wringing and worry about gang problems--but here in Philadelphia, we're on pace for more than 1 murder and 5 shootings PER DAY.

Last week a police officer was shot as he walked into a Dunkin' Donuts that was being robbed. I'll repeat that--a guy was robbing a freaking DUNKIN' DONUTS, and decided "cop killer" was a good title to add to his resume.

I miss Calgary.

I remember when I spent some time in Detroit with some friends and we were having this conversation. You can always hear police sirens, the occasional scream and gunshot. Its as commonplace as hearing traffic in Calgary.

I asked these guys what they do, do they just keep walking or what? Their answer?

Hell no. Thats when you start to run.

I remember not too long before that I had heard a gunshot in downtown Calgary and it didnt even register to me until I had already left the area. What the hell was that? Was that a gunshot?

Before going to Detroit I hardly even knew what a real gunshot sounded like.

Yeah, I wouldn't compare Wichita to any of the 2 mil + metro areas.

I was in Philly when I was 5, so much history.

But I wonder if Wichita's murder rate is higher than say....Minneapolis for instance.

Minneapolis tops the "most affordable places to live well" category in the US. So I'd assume crime to be somewhat low.

Minneapolis is a nice city--and though I don't know the stats, it's always felt really safe to me. Parts of Philadelphia... let's just say you lock your car doors, and drive as fast as you can. And the weird thing is that other parts of the city are really nice.

As for Wichita--40 murders seems high for a small-ish city. What if you adjust for population? Philly is around 2 million, but 5.8 if you include the Metro area. And they have, I think, 320 homicides so far this year. How big is Wichita?
