That's what I thought too. Is this just the media being the media or is there something to be said here??

I mean obviously as the city grows larger people have to be more careful, but Serial Killer, that is a bold and scary thought.

Doesn't there have to be multiple murders of the same modus operendi to even be considered close to the definition a serial killer?

A convienent and sexy buzz word, as mentioned above, for the media to eat up and give a reason to trot out criminologists and psychiatrists etc in order to scare people unneccesarily.

Just like supposed professional financial analysts rollling out how he Prime Rate would be down to 2.25 in the next 3 months after one bad day in the markets Monday.

For this reason I have very little time anymore to bother with Global News at 11..over dramatics with some thin journalism and many assumptions backing these type of stories.

Yeah, that article "3 Calgary women murdered within 5 months" is a pretty big leap from random murders to serial killer. To me, a parapragh like "These murders are different, in that the deaths involved cruelty. The phrase 'serial killer' is repeated in coffee shops, and on C-Trains, and around the proverbial office water-cooler," is very irresponsible journalism.

You have one body dismembered and dumped in the river, one killed in a high risk area (and in an intersection where her screams were heard) and one in a more secluded area. Doesn't really sound like the same dude to me. And "the deaths involved cruelty" is hardly a solid link between the three.

Man, i haven't even heard about some of those...I'm living in Vancouver now, but that is quite disturbing. Not to start another "whats going on in Calgary" thread, but WTF?

Calgary has seen serial predators of all kinds before and will again. Has nothing to do with the city itself, these guys are all over the place and come from every type of background possible.

The hooker murders committed in both Calgary and Edmonton over the course of the late 80's and 90's as one example. Not sure if they ever solved that one or not. One of the victims worked for me at one time before spiralling into that lifestyle as a matter of fact.

I have read a few books over the years about serial killers. The book Mind Hunters written by John Douglas who developed criminal profiling for the FBI, talks a lot about various serial killers. According to him, when a victim is severally beaten or savagely mutilated. It usually indicates that the killer was know to the victim. For example a scorned lover who has built up a lot of rage.

So much for journalism. Let's not bother with letting the cops do their job. If they are not commenting, make up some bull about a possible serial killer.

I feel bad for the trees that are used to print the Sun.

The Herald article is the way reporting should be done.
