The Trance Thread
So there is a metal thread, which is awesome.
But every now and then, some good euro trance is nice to have in the background while I am working away.
Not sure there are any trance fans on here, but for those of that are, what are some of your favorites?
Pretty much all I have found (albeit very limited search) that I really like is DJ Tiesto.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Well it seems this is all I listen to now while I'm studying and working and working out...
I am a huge fan of live sets primarily done by Tiesto, Paul van Dyk and Armin van Buuren. Have got a couple of favorite live sets, and Armin van Buuren does his weekly show called The State of Trance, keeps you up to date with the new stuff going around.
PM me and I can fire you off the name of some of those live sets.

Wow, Tiesto is very commercialied. But I will hand it to him, the guy sure knows how to market himself.
The best thing to figure out is what kind of trance you like the best. Hard Trance? Uplifting trance?
A good place to start if you want to expand your horizons is look at soem of the big trace dj's like Armin Van Buuren of Ferry Corsten. They all have webistes and some even host weekly radio shows. Take a look at some of the tunes they like to play out and have a listen to them. Slowly you will find your owns tastes.

http://themixingbowl.org/
(mods, this is mostly legit, it's just radio shows from the bbc and the such)

For those that think that Trance is merely a bunch of rubes playing with their 303's or 808's:

I have an eclectic taste in music and trance is one of my favorites. I would highly suggest checking out Above & Beyond. My favorite songs are "Alone Tonight" and "Can't Sleep".
I'd also suggest Supermode, Ultrabeat, Mylo and Taxi Doll.

I like the theme from Desktop Turret Defense. Wait for the ad to finish then load the Frog. If you play a level now and again the music changes.
Good background beat.

I'm really into EDM. I usually just stick to the trance genre though. Stuff like hard trance, uplifting/epic, tech-trance is all good. Some prog-trance is alright aswell as breakbeat.
I really don't have any favourite DJ's. I do have a favourite song though: Contraption - Laguna. Beautiful melodic trance track.
A site I like to use quite a lot to keep me up to date on the latest releases is www.crystalclouds.com (requires you to register, but it's free). It's a site where DJ's upload their sets for us to download. They've got a lot of amateur DJ's (some really good ones), but it also has some bigger named artists like Aly & Fila, Menno de Jong, and others. It's updated quite frequently aswell.
If people need any sites to sample/buy I use www.audiojelly.com or www.beatport.com . Both decent sites with a large quantity of electronic music.

I dabble a little bit in trance... but not extensively... i am more inclined to listen to Massive attack, Theivery Corporation or Asian Dub foundation.. .more of an ambient sound.
However.... if ever in London i would recommend going to the Ministry of Sound Nightclub at the elephant and castle underground stop. Costs about 50 CND to get in, but there are like 3 or 4 DJ's in different rooms playing anything from slower, ambient to really hard trance that has warnings on the wall about excessive noise levels.

Well, everyone has their own interpretation of the differences, but I'll go ahead and give you mine (and probably get flamed for it lol).
Progressive is exactly as the name describes. Characterized by intermittent build ups (progressions) in the tracks leading to a climax of sorts.
House is the most laid back of the three. I find the house sound has more beats in the tracks itself.
Trance is more electronic.

As someone posted before
http://www.di.fm/edmguide/edmguide.html
is a good guide.
A site that DJs use to download actual tracks they play:
www.beatport.com
The difference between the genres is based upon:
BPM
The drum sound
The beat style
but actually learning to pick apart a song quickly takes some time.
progressive isn't actually a genre of electronica, it's attached to one of them, like progressive house, or progressive trance.
generally though, in my opinion (I spin house and breaks usually
House is a 4/4 beat, usually around 125-135 BPM, and feels more soulful/funky, etc. Djs/producers: MSTRKRFT, DJ Dan, Deadmau5. Local DJs: Jon Delirious, Dom G
Trance is a 4/4 beat, more repetitive than house, often full of "wave your hands in the air feeling". It's around 135-145BPM (mostly, this can vary) DJs/Producers: Tiesto, AVB, well, lots have been listed already Local DJs: Rodi Styles
Techno is a 4/4 beat. It feels like machines have made it. the BPM can vary widely in this genre, I have techno tracks s slow as 124BPM, and some up to around 140BPM+ DJ/Producers: Dave the Drummer, Orbital, Ritchie Hawkins. Local DJs: ANX
Breakbeat is kind of close to house, expcept it has a "broken" beat, meaning its not a just a 4/4 bass beat. Most hip hop gets it's beats from this genre now. BPM is similar to house DJs/Producers: Krafty Kuts, Stanton Warriors. Local DJs: Can't think of one right now
Jungle/Drum and Bass is another broken beat genre, but faster than breakbeat, and known for being much more aggressive. BPM is trance speeds or faster, usually. DJs/Producers: Diesel Boy, Hive
Hardcore is stupidly fast, and either very angry and aggressive or stupid and fun. BPM at lest 150, but usually higher. DJs/Producers: I don't ealy listen to this genre..
And last:
Ambient. basically anything else can be thrown in here. it
s had to classify this genre, as it's incredibly wide. Anything from Aphex Twin, to Boards of Canada, to Enya can be considered ambient.
