Default New car Anti-Rust Treatment (Rust Protection) Question

Just purchase a new car yesterday. Very happy.
But looking outside the window this morning, the 1st "real" snowfall of the winter reminded me, what about rust proofing?

I am thinking of getting Rust Protection for my new car (just the bottom of the car, not the body) due to Calgary's weather and the salt on the road from snowplowing. Just want to seek some opinions whether it is worth it or not on my new car. I know I will probably get a range of answers from "It is worth every penny" to "It is just a scam for dealers to make more money". So, convince me! If so, what is the price range of this treatment? And should I go back to my dealership to get it down? or at other locations?

Any opinions and advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks fellow CPers!

you can get it done at the dealership for around $1200 (rape) or you can go to most accessory or detail places and do it for around $500, including fabric protection, rock guard and rust proof.

But is it necessary on new vehicles these days? I bought my car last winter and did not get this done.

it depends on if you are leasing the vehicle or plan to own it until it dies. If you plan on getting rid of it in a handful of years there is no point. In calgary, with the salt on the roads it is very much worth it if you plan on retaining the vehicle. Plus the rock guard is good because it protect the rocker panel of a vehicle from rocks your own vehicle (and others) kick up.

The new goggles also do nothing.

Depends on the vehicle too, my car came with a 10 year body warranty including rust protection.

the price seems steep.. I am just hoping to get the coating done for the bottom of my car.. I am planning to take really good care of the vechile, and it seems like the coating will provide a sense of comfort at least when it comes to rusting (especially the bottom since it has the most close contact with the road)

and anyone here with any experience with the 3M tape across the hood? are they any good protecting from rock chips etc?

Your car is galvanized which acts as a sacrificial anode and will take care of rust for quite some time, especially in a dry and not very salty place like Calgary. If you are keeping your car for over 10 years, go for it. Otherwise you're wasting your time. Personally, if I have a 10 year old car, I don't really care if its rusting a bit as it's worth next to nothing by that point anyways.

Has Calgary started using a lot of salt on the roads? In all the years I lived there I only ever remember there being a lot of gravel on the roads, unlike Vancouver where you need to be more worried about skidding on piled up salt than you do on patches of ice or snow.
