Social networking site Facebook is close to signing a deal with either Microsoft Corp. or Google Inc. that would value it at up to $15 billion U.S., according to several reports.

That 15bil number has been around a while. It would make NewsCorp's purchase of Myspace look like pure genious. M$ has cash to blow but it doesnt fit their buisness model.

Everytime they try to buy a niche style company with a grassroots following that company dies or gets absorbed and phased out. There will always be a segment of the population that will never like M$ (whether it be Windows, money, virus related etc). And as soon as M$ gets their hands on something like that it dies.

I can see them doing it simply to give their stock a jumpstart but in the end Office and Server OS's make them money, not monkey ventures like this (x360 is a smidge different because they are trying to use this to muscle out the low end PC market).

if it's a 10% stake that values the company at 15 bil, the stake itself is 'only' 1.5 billion.

The way I read it is MS/Google is PAYING $15 billion FOR the 10% stake plus advertising rights. So by your logic FB would be worth $150 billion

edit...nevermind, just re-read it, looks like you had it right.
