Default Question for Mac users

I bought a Macbook last Spring, and it's been great. But now I am getting emails about pre-ordering Leopard. I generally use the laptop only for the Internet and e-mail. I don't need it to do anything fancy, and I plan on buying a desktop Mac within the year or so. Are there enough upgrades on Leopard to make it worth the 129.99 pricetag for someone like me?

Just for internet and email? No.

If you're like me, and work constantly on your computer, there are definitely some nice productivity enhancements that make it worthwile.

Tiger is a great system. Probably one of the best OS's yet.

If you're happy with the current OS, I wouldn't worry about it. The initial releases of new OSes usually have glitches that need ironing out anyway. I've used Macs for 18 years, and I've seldom bought a new OS as soon as it comes out. I usually wait for the first update at least. Plus, if you're getting a desktop Mac within the year anyway, it will ship with Leopard and you'll get a chance to check it out first.

Agreed with the above. I only upgrade the OS when I run into a piece of software that I absolutely need to run that requires it. If you are happy with the software that you have and it does everything you need it to do, don't bother.

I agree that if you only use it for internet and email there is no point in upgrading.
It's the same reason I'm not upgrading my iPod. It works, has more space then I need, and plays music and video. Why would I upgrade to one that does the same just because its fancier?

On the newsstands there is a Mac mag (MacLife?) that has an article on how you can get 5 of the most desired Leopard features in the current 10.4 version...

But in any case, wait a few months for the bugs to be worked out...

Time Machine in Leopard will make backups foolproof. That alone is worth the price to upgrade.

It's my understanding that Time Machine will backup to .Mac servers.

Other then that, what does it offer beyond what a simple zip utility would do?

I've heard some really cool features of this OS....I just bought a mac a few weeks ago, but will probably spend the $130 and add this. Along with what Sclitheroe mentioned, the other cool thing is being able to split the screen into 4 applications (I haven't seen this, just heard about it).

Apple is so cutting edge...

If you bought your mac in October, the new OS is free for you.

Well, sort of. I mean, Im sure you can do some backing up to .mac, but you cant back up your entire hard drive.

Time Machine is intended mostly for USB external drives. It's got a beautiful interface, and is probably the easiest backup application yet created.

Have a look at the info page, and tell me if it compares to zipping your files

It looks very neat. I just watched the demo video on there website, and it has some really neat features. I think the spaces feature will be great, especially at work ; )

Complete point-in-time hourly backups of your entire system to an external drive, completely searchable through Spotlight. Basically, you can retrieve files individually, or roll your entire machine or portions of your machine forward/backward in time as needed.

The MacBook Pro is going to be tricky. I've got Windows running under Parallel. If I want to switch to Bootcamp, I'm looking at a reinstall and backup of my windows files.

Takes a long time to install Leopard though. Much longer than any previous OS.

Coverflow in the finder is neat!
