On a last minute whim I went to Halifax this weekend with some friends. We were picking up one guy I know in the south end. As we were picking him up, there was a group of people standing on a step on the street. One guy had an 80's Flames jersey on. Someone bad mouthed the Flames to him, loudly. So I chime in from the car, "HEY, DON'T BE TRASH TALKIN' THE FLAMES!!!"

A girl on the step yells "are you really a Flames fan"

I reply "of course, greatest team on Earth. You know what they say, the sky is blue and the sea is red."

And it went over all their heads.

I guess I can't expect much in the East, but hey, I tried right.

If I ever get to Calgary again I'll be dropping that line like Snoop Dog drops it like it's hot.

I wouldn't have had a clue what you were talking about. I'm not sure 'sea of red' is a popular expression outside Calgary... you might have to be a pretty big/local fan to get that.

Lol, that's pretty funny. I actually trained my g/f on that one. She visits CP from time to time so to see if she read that thread I did the "the sky is blue" and she looked at me kinda wierd so I filled in the rest for her. I really wanna drop that one in the dome one day, sure hope it works as it could backfire. Badly.

Actually, "The sea is red" is the response.

I think it was at the beginning of the playoffs in 2006(?), someone posted that it would be great if there was some way you could identify other CPers when you're at the games. Some people were saying that they often saw people at games who matched the description of various posters but they didn't want to embarrass themselves by going up to a complete stranger and saying "hey, are you REDVAN?" and having the other person look at them like they were insane.

So, someone suggested the creation of a secret signal that CPers could use to identify themselves to each other. That was when the idea of using the call/response of "the sky is blue"..."the sea is red" was suggested.

If you're walking through the Saddledome and you see someone you think might be another CPer, you say loudly, "the sky is blue". If anyone within earshot is also a CPer, they will respond with "the sea is red" and you will have a new CP friend in real life.

I don't know if anyone has actually ever tried it and/or been successful in identifying another CPer with it.

Every time I say that during a game, they score. So I quit. (Except last night I said it so Lou wouldn't get a shutout...)

Ok this line totally works.

I met a guy last night who is the boyfriend of one of my school friends. He said: the sky is blue... and I replied, and the C is red!!!!

So the line actually works. But on a sidenote- if you asked someone randomly, I doubt it would happen. I knew, through my friend, that he was a CP member, so I was prepared for some CP talk!

It was a very last minute thing. I didn't get to make any plans in advance at all.

A friend of mine was heading up for a family gathering on the weekend. He wanted people to help fill the car, so 3 of us piled in his car along with his mom.

I was restricted in terms of transportation, and then couldn't abandon the other four alone in Halifax (well I suppose I could have, but I wouldn't get the ride back, haha).

I would have LOVED to head to the Oasis for one of the games on the weekend.

Next time, (in the new year more than likely) I'll be sure to set aside a weekend for Flames hockey (and hopefully my new jersey will be in by then, holy slow USPS batman).

I owe you beer, I won't forget. I want to be able to ensure I fully repay and enjoy the wealth myself.
