Calgary-5 shootings in 1 Weekend
Living out in Van, I like to tune into Global Calgary sometimes to watch the news and see what's going on back home.
They were showing a story about some shootings in Mackenzie and then mentioned that there was a total of 5 seperate shootings this weekend in Calgary.
I was shocked. WTF is happening to Calgary? Why is everyone so loco?

It's cause both the Flames and the Stampeders lost - people get angry about that ....
But seriously, it's turning crazy here. We're all aware of it, and wish something could be done. I'm born and raised here, but as soon as I can, I'm bailing from this city and moving away again - I've had it up to here with the violence, stress, and dishonest people. I don't want to stick around here any longer, and I know a few people who feel the same way.
WTF happened to our little community we call Calgary??

5? Wow..........I lived in Edmonton for the past 5 years and just moved to Calgary in August hoping it would be a nice change of scenery from all the violence. So far in a month i've been here it's been the same if not worse then it was there. That's horrible.

Rich kids with big problems.
The city of Calgary lacks any real investment in anything but the market place. Every big city has problems with violence and crime but Calgary and alberta for that matter has turned a blind eye too it for so long that it has gotten way out of hand. Maybe is we put some of our abundent wealth into socail programs or god forbid teach our youth some morals we wouldn't be facing these problems.

This city has gone to hell. I was born here and she really ain't what she used to be, unfortunately.
It used to be a city of convenience, safe, not overcrowded but now there's so much traffic, there's more homeless downtown IMO more serious crimes, not to mention the overblown house prices and overrated amenities.
Calgary will always be my home, but there's really not enough going for it anymore for me to live here long term.
I miss MY Calgary

Sadly, as a (part time) Calgarian, I'm the same way. I just isn't anything like the Calgary I grew up in.

I'd like to know how this can all be pinned on kids? Rich kids for that matter.

Glad I moved to a small town. Could see the violence coming and got out of Dodge as quick as I could. The Calgary today is NOT the same as the as the one I grew up in. Sad to see to what is going on.

In reality, crime rates are down in Calgary. However these spurts of shootings and stabbings we've had this year are high profile and give a perception of a much less safe city, even though the statistics don't support that perception.

My mind and my heart tells me I'm ready to leave but unfortunately my bank account isn't saying the same thing. When it does, I'm gone.

The huge gang problem can also be associated with all the violence.

That's actually good news to me, because I'd be far more afraid of random acts of violence. Just stay the hell away from gang life in this city and you're at least half safe.

I am never surprised at any violent acts that occur in Calgary. Been a long time since anything has shocked me. It is no longer a little community, never will be again and hasn't been that way for a long time. Calgary has the same problems as every other city with similar populations. To expect things to be the same as when it was 500k to 600k is expecting the impossible. Not only has the city gotten bigger, but society has changed as well.
Things will always happen, shootings, stabbings, robberies and yes even murders. I guess that is the things one has to remember and put up with when living in a larger populated city(and I find Calgary to be small). The only option is for those whom cant handle it anymore(perhaps used to small town living), is rural living, since it might be the only option for them now.
I dont believe the sky if falling either, its just normal city life.

I don't care just as long as the gang members keep shooting each other. Generally it's not some soccer mom getting popped. It's someone who owes someone money or a bad drug deal or something like that.

i wish it was that secluded of a problem here. we have horrible gang violence. unfortunately, they hurt a lot of innocent people in the process. just this last weekend a 6 year old girl got killed in a driveby. shootings here (sometimes multiple times) are an every day occurance. the only real seclusion is that it is mainly in certain parts of town. and omaha is far from what i would consider a big town. lots of drugs, lots of violence. if the electrical work wasn't all here, we would move to the upper east coast in a heartbeat. give me vermont, maine, massachusets, new hampshire and i'd be a happy girl.

Agreed. I don't feel the city is any less safer now than it was 5-10 years ago. The news is pretty good at sensationalizing things and making this city out to be a quaint little town that is now destroyed by violence and drugs.

Calgary has generated a large amount of wealth in a short time. What better place for the criminal element to migrate towards?
On top of that the explosive growth means people don't get to know their neighbours anymore, or if they do it is only within a house or two. If you don't know your neighbours you just don't care as much. When crime hits someone "down the street" as opposed to "Bill and Carol" then it just mean as much to you.
Then there is the stressed out facilities. I understand that with the inadequate transportation infrastructure that people believe that should be taken care of first, but recreation would give some of these people something better to do with their time than hang out with whomever lives on the street. The boy who lived the other side of the alley from me seemed to grow up this summer, and liked to hang around with his friends in the alley. Seeing him play with a lighter burning stuff for fun sure didn't give much peace of mind (I was not sad to see them move).
Add on to that the stress of living in Calgary - mortgages have gone through the roof. I would like to move, but as fast as my house goes up in value, so does what I would aspire to. My drive to work is relatively short compared to many others, but I still get frustrated in heavy traffic. I've been working altogether too much OT, and this has created stresses at home. Stores are busy and understaffed, customer service is hit or miss at the best of times - largely do to staffing shortages, but those jobs are lower on the payscale, so there are fewer applicants, but people can't afford to move here and the ones that can aren't going to be the ones to fill these jobs.
It is all just a huge number of stresses that all seem to have come along for the ride with the boom.
I just hope there are no knee jerk solutions implemented. While I would love to have everything settled down tomorrow, realistically long term solutions don't work overnight.
