Thankfully the changes to the Predators penalty killing appear to have made a difference here, otherwise this could've been a tie!
Also of note, Jim Dowd looks 10 years younger tonight with a three point effort!

good
possibly the worst game by the Sabres in about 5 years....this is what I hate about the SIM, second year in a row preseason confuses me into thinking that some parts of my team are working well...then in 2 games we let in 16 goals...WTF? Is Giguere a 82 OV or a 28??

Wings 4 Panthers 0
Wings win with a skunk. Willie Mitchell has now played about 5 minutes of total ice time in 2 games and has racked up 29 PMS. And now he has received a 5 game suspension. Not sure why but maybe it has something to do with that wuss Scott Hannan being carried off the ice 4 minutes into the game. Wonder if he had anything to do with Mike Johnson crawling to the bench 16 seconds earlier on the same shift as well.
Mike Johnson injured at 04:16 of the 1st Period
Scott Hannan injured at 04:32 of the 1st Period
Willie Mitchell ejected at 04:32 of the 1st Period
Willie Mitchell receives 5 game suspension
Although being out shot by the Panthers Turdco stood tall in net.

Scoring Winger
|
Well, my Stars didn't win, but I'm still pretty happy with the first weekend.
The Good
-Nice rally in the Chicago game.
-Scored 4 goals on Nashville with Elias out. 36 shots on goal in the Nashville game, could have stolen that one but for Jim Dowd
-Bates played well with more ice time.
-Markov playing great, 1g 2a in the 2 games.
The Bad
-6 goals against is a little too much, but part of that is only having 2 1/2 lines up front. Legace now carrying a 4.62 GAA
-Not happy giving up a shorthanded goal to anyone, no matter how much talent the other team has.

Sharks 6 - Oilers 1
After giving up 7 goals to the LA Kings the night before, Scott Niedermayer and company were determined to not let that happen again. So determined in fact, they pulled almost a complete 180 and turned the tables on the unsuspecting Oilers.
Despite being outshot 33-26 and having to make up for two seperate game misconducts by Sutherby in the 1st and top scoring winger Miroslav Satan in the 2nd, the Sharks made the most out of their opportunities and made this night one that the great Marty Brodeur will, unfortunately for him, not soon forget.
Game Stars
1 - Peter Budaj (SHA) - The young netminder was under some pressure to perform after having a rough pre-season and made a stellar case for himself as to why he should be the Sharks go-to guy down the road, stopping 32 of the 33 shots he faced.
2 - Scott Niedermayer (SHA) - Played like the teams best player should play. Logged 27 minutes and did everything out there. Assisted on a short handed goal early in the 1st, then scored his own short hander half way through the 3rd.
3 - Dimitri Afanasenkov (SHA) - Afana has had a great pre-season and has continued that to start the regular season! Scored the first shorthanded goal and with a goal and two assist after 2 games, he looks to be a blessing in disguise on the 3rd line.
Power Play Conversions
SHARKS 1 for 4
OILERS 0 for 6
Special teams was the name of the game for the Sharks in this one. One PP and two SH goals can go a long way in guaranteeing a victory on any given night. The Sharks penalty kill lines will be extremely dangerous all season with Forsberg, Tucker and Niedermayer defending. Although each one is defensively responsible, all three have an abundance of scoring ability and can turn an advantage into a disadvantage in the blink of an eye.
It is expected Budaj will be given the green light as long as he keeps up his amazing play, and after Gerber's performance (or lack thereof) last night, GM RT couldn't be happier that the young stopper chose this night to display his tremendous skills. We may actually have a "keeper" here!

Much better effort by the Pens today. Bryan McCabe nade up for a horrendous debut with two goals and Todd Bertuzzi was the best player on the ice all night crashing and banging every chance he had. Luongo was a bit better as well only allowing 2 goals on 19 shots. The Pens hope we can build on this for the next game which is against the B's who appear to have our number.

Flames 3 Canucks 3
Flames peppered 40 shots at Martin Biron but could only come away with a tie. Big guns, Bill Guerin and Alexei Kovalev had big nights tonight, collecting 2 and 3 points respectively. Flames ole "Foote" solider also played well collecing a couple of points.
Flames are still in limbo and unsure of which direction the team will take. And starting the season off with a win and tie isnt making the choice any easier.
Goalie Statistics
Martin Biron (CAN), 37 saves out of 40 shots, T, 0-1-1
Miikka Kiprusoff (FLA), 19 saves out of 22 shots, T, 1-0-1
Power Play Conversions
CANUCKS 2 for 6
FLAMES 1 for 4
Game Stars
1 - Bill Guerin (FLA)
2 - Alexei Kovalev (FLA)
3 - some Canuck guy

Isles get their first win of the season... keeping the goals against down, but scoring is evidently a problem so far.

Rangers 6 - Thrashers 3
Well the first period was a wild one, Thrashers came flying out of the gate scoring two quick goals. Rangers finally woke up and scored three times to end the first period.
The second period was a quiet one
Rangers took a 4-2 lead early in the third, Thrasher scored to make it 4-3 but Andrew Brunnette scored a beautiful goal and setup another to seal the deal
Power Play Conversions
RANGERS 0 for 5
THRASHERS 0 for 5
Game Stars 1 - Pavel Datsyuk (THR)
2 - Eric Brewer (RAN)
3 - Andrew Brunette (RAN)
News and Notes
Rangers have played three games in three nights.
Schedule makers have added a fourth game. Then the boys in blue get a rest
As predicted by GM Flambers the point producer on the Rangers team is Andrew Brunette. In three Games Andrew has 7 points.
So far the goalies have rotated, but David Aebischer looks to have won the starter position.

Devils 4 Capitals 4
The Devils move their record to 1-0-1 with a 4-4 tie to the Capitals last night. Corey Perry contributes a goal and an assist in the effort, while Ed Belfour was busy, making 31 of 35 saves.
In addition to allowing too many shots, some sore spots on the evening include taking 9 penalties and squandering a two-goal lead early in the game.

Coyotes run Wild on Jackets
The Phoenix Coyotes pulled out a come from behind 2-1 win over the lowly Columbus Blue Jackets today. The game was a slow starter as the two teams combined for 0 goals and 7 shots in a pretty listless first period. The hilight of the period was Brett Clark elbowing Tuomo Ruutu in the hip and causing the Jackets young finnish player to leave the game with a case to "Hüftbeschwerden".
The Jackets managed to get the scoring going early in the second when Dennis Wideman ripped a shot over Vesa Toskala's weak, weak glove hand. AHL great Ladislav Smid, and SEL division 1 fodder Jeff "I don't have an attitude problem" Freisen drawing assists on the goal. The Yotes however evened the score less than 5 minutes later when Alex "screw you Sedins, I am the CPHL's pony master" Ponikarovski tipped home a Flip Kuba point shot. The Coyotes pulled ahead early in the third after Craig Adams was assessed a very weak penalty for roughing after referee Mick McGeough came out of the officials room absolutely blitzed to start the third period. Pavel Kubina's wrist shot through a crowd illuded everyone including Anterro Nittymaki to give the Coyotes the lead for good. For the rest of the period McGeough proceeded to steal the show as he blew dead several Jackets break aways for no good reason. After the game it was revealed that Coyotes GM Drunk had a case of Alexander Keiths sent to the officials room with $3000 and a note stating "Do anything you can to make the Jackets loose the game but keep the over under below 4.5." But in a league that embraces scandal....no discipline is expected to be taken against the Cryotes.
