Default Ducks add Jovanovski

The ducks and bluejackets seem to like trading with each other as they made another move, the 3rd trade between the two teams within the past couple weeks.

Coming to the Ducks are Mark Streit and Ed Jovanovski but going the other way to CBJ is Weiss, Tanabe, Zednik and the NYR 1st Rd pick in 08.

Zednik was a salary dump and tanabe was more of the same. The Ducks are extremely sad to see Weiss go but felt that the team needed a higher ranked veteran to help compete for a playoff spot this season. We wish him the best of luck on CBJ and hope he continues to have a great NHL career.

All in all, CBJ gets great youth in Weiss and a decent pick in a deep 08 draft and the Ducks get the high ranked veteran they wanted. Thanks for makin this process fun Chad, look forward to more deals with you down the road!

Hmm...after looking at the trade yet again...I thought the Jackets won the trade outright until I looked at the stats. Still a bit of an over payment by the Ducks for an aging Jovo, but it's not as bad as I initially thought

I think this deal depends on Jovo. If he can bounce back and become an elite dman in Phoenix then the deal is pretty even longterm, if Jovo flops then I think this deal looks bad down the road for the ducks. No doubt though that the Ducks get better for this season.

Well consider that Zednik has an albatross of a contract that goes into next year. Unless I can move him before the end of the season I'll have to buy him out as you simply can't afford to dole out 4.25 million to 72 OV players. Tanabe also has a very expensive contract that goes into next year and he's essentially become a fringe 6-7th defenceman who floats around looking to latch onto a team late in training camp type of thing. So really how much value to those guys have as players? Essentially it is a top pairing defenceman for Weiss and a 1st round pick thats likely between 15-25 in the draft and the other guys are salary dumps. So long as Weiss is behind Jokinen he'll be a second line player, whereas Jovo still plays 25 minutes a night. I don't know how many other 79 OV defenceman were available in the CPHL so if you want to improve your team now you need to find a team that will trade one for the assets you're offering.

Ironically though...it almost seems to help my depth this year though as Zednik and Weiss will see a fair bit of ice for me and so will Tanabe until I find a way to get rid of him. Going forward we do have 3 first round picks in the draft and a possible under 25 forward core of Kane, Little, Ruutu, Weiss, Pavelski that we can work with. I think we're at a point where if we can find a proper goalie, a couple of upgrades on defence, and a real top line forward we might be able to make a good step forward next year. If we can stay the course and avoid doing something excessively stupid, we should be an up and coming playoff team by the next year at the latest.

Forgot to add that the Ducks do get Streit who I think is a bit under rated in terms of being an offensive type defenceman. But the issue there was that Striet is a pending UFA and my feeling is that he'll likely be a 73 or 74OV guy and I'd have to let him go as a UFA as 73-74 is the grids rating of death where average players get paid too much money. Still Streit is versatile, can play F or D, and might get a ratings bump mid year. I'd take him over Zednik, or Tanabe any day.
