I assume the operative word in that sentence is "big"?

I work at the Catholic School Board building, which is right on that corner. We were told that a man has barricaded himself inside his condo and has a gun. Apparently he went out onto his balconey forcing the police to close 5th.
As of 2:00 pm, however, 5th is open again.

Similar to what I have heard except that a man is on the roof of a building with a rifle...

Just got an email from work, not much detail:
"We have heard that the police have cordoned an area between 4th and 6th Ave and 7th and 9th Street. If you are working or commuting near this area, please use caution."

Aw crap I live on that corner and I was out of town all day so I missed all the fun! I hope it wasn't a hoax, I hope it was somebody who finally snapped on my downstairs neighbour and put an end to her misery. Witch.
Last Thursday about 1 AM some moron came and hammered on my door until I finally got up (not knocking but full fist frickin' hammering); he was looking for two guys who did not, in fact, live in my apartment. He looked like the type who might have been there to break their legs for non-payment of a drug debt. Maybe I should move...
