Default Moving to La Jolla!

Hello all,

I have not posted very often but like most I lurk around and spend more time reading than I probably should. I really enjoy the site especially on game days.

As the title of the post reads my family and I are moving from edmonton (I know) to La Jolla CA in a couple months. My wife and I have a 14 month old. I grew up in Calgary and my wife is from Saskatchewan and we expect there will be more than a few things that might surprise us about our new life.

I have read other posts about things that are exclusive to the USA and such. However, I was curious if any of you could give me your insights about living in the US and California in particular?

- Prospects of playing a little hockey.
- Watching NHL hockey especially the Flames.
- BBQ with wood/charcoal vs propane.
- New car prices, insurance etc.
- National parks, camping.

Anything and everything is appreciated. We are certainly not moving down there blind but it is always interesting to hear what others have to say.

Thanks in advance,

Radley

I was in La Jolla about a month ago, love the city (San Diego). You can go paragliding and sea kayaking and stuff like that. Its more of a flashy life style then Canada, but like alot of US cities, you get some real low slums in there as well and its kind of dirty.

Mexican food is super great there.

San Diego is definatly a place I'm interested in moving to a a few years

You can probably get a great deal on a home in this part of La Jolla:

San Diego is German for a "whale's vagina."

Sweet... we were in San Diego this summer and we really enjoyed it. Not sure what it's like to live there but La Jolla seemed like a very nice area... congrats and good luck!

* Go to Petco, that park alone may make you a baseball fan.

* If you like horse racing one of the best tracks on earth is Del Mar

* Unless the company is taking care of you, consider renting for 6 months, I think we have yet to see the bottom of California real estate prices.

played a team from La Jolla when I was down in LA for a tourney at the kings practice facility. They had unreal style with their yellow buckets.

La Jolla is slowly being swallowed up by the angry underground God, Metacarzallopaskeroonierplastormat.

Be very careful!

Despite that, housing prices are just insane. My house is probably worth $500,000 there.

I for one welcome my new underground god Metacarzallopaskeroonierplastormat. (Mental note: learn how to spell gods name. Copy/Paste may upset him)

Good to know, I will have to practice up on my German. I wonder if this has any effect on the cost of hookers and blow or scotch for that matter. I really like scotch.

Beautiful area, but I hope you have a really good job. California is ridiculously expensive. Housing is just the tip of the iceberg. Everything, and I mean everything, is expensive.

Just take the 1 hour train ride to Tijuana and you'll be ok...

The closest NHL team to you will be the Anaheim Ducks. I BELIEVE (though dont know exactly) its about 90 miles away. So that puts you at about 130 miles away to Staples. In general, people aren't really into WATCHIN there...they used to have an ECHL team called the San Diego Gulls, who left..here's the link on that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Diego_Gulls

People are more into their Chargers/Padres. People PLAY more hockey than they watch...San Diego State has a team as well. I'm not sure how old you are..

Shopping there is amazing as there are lots of outlets, you're right at the Mexico Border, that will be fun. La Jolla is the home to UCSD (Univ of California, San Diego) so lots of young people.

Also, the downtown are (called the Gaslamp district) is SUPER fun to hang out at. They have an amazing Zoo there and a wild animal park that attracts tourism.

Housing prices SUCK, however, California is in a housing slump right now and prices are bottomed out, so it's definately a buyer's market. Also, it's cheaper than the Bay Area (SF, SJ etc). But it's definately a buyer's market..you can have a lot of things thrown in for you (upgrades, closing costs etc).

New car prices..should be the same price/cheaper than Canada. Same with insurance.

Im not too familiar with National Parks there, but if you drive a few hours, you can definately ski in the winter!

Plus, you're SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO close to Vegas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me know if you have anymore specific questions. I spent a week there a year ago and it was a great time! It's smaller of an area than Los Angeles and San Francisco and people are FRIENDLY!!

I should add that it's one of the MOST beautiful areas of California...amazing WEATHER too! It's gorgeous there. Prolly my favorite area of Califonria...I'd move to San Diego/La Jolla if I could

nice choice, La Jolla is one of my favorite places I've been. Do you mind if I ask what work you'll be doing down there?

as for your questions:
-cars are dirt cheap compared to western Canada.
-you're fairly close to Yosemite which is wicked, and Joshua tree near palm springs is good as well. Both have good camping.
