Nords Make Big Changes... Pending League Approval
2 Deals are done... as far as the GMs are concerned, and one is in need of some minor tweaks... but the Quebec Nordiques continue their overhaul in the right direction.
I will comment on the deals once the league has had their chance to look over, and approve the pacts.
PS - I'm now glad the CPHL added $3M to our rosters

Nice deal in getting Kozlov and Kapanen from CBJ. Alzner will be very good but for right now that's a great deal for you.

Yeah, after a horrible pre-season in which the team did absolutely nothing I finally decided that the team was actually worse than I thought they were. Now that we're off the hook of owing our first round pick to anyone we felt we could start looking to move some of our veteran players in an attempt to pick up some younger assets that we feel will grow over the course of the season.
We certainly give up a lot in terms of today player as Kozlov and Kapanen are the two best players in the deal right now by a long margin. But Kozlov is 35 and he'll require a raise of sometype next year if I wanted to retain him as a UFA. Kapanen is a good versatile guy who can play F and D, and probably should be a D given how his ratings stack up. Again an older guy and with that a bigger meal ticket. Given where my team was it's probably best to move these guys to places where they stand a shot to contribute towards a more successful team.
Coming back I get Pavelski who is a good younger guy with some scoring potential. A late bloomer type he showed some good scoring when first getting to the NHL last year and the NHL Sharks usually give their own guys a lot more oppurtunity to become players than pretty much any other NHL team. Alzner is a blue chip prospect who might even stand a chance at being in the NHL next year. He's got good size, skates well and is a smart guy who really takes care of his own end. He has a nice offensive skill set, but just needs to become more comfortable adding that role to his game. Smithson is a depth forward, but he should get a chance to get in some ice time with the Preds this year.
Overall our average age has come down quite a bit here in the past couple of days which was something we needed to do. We need our young guys to grow over the course of the year and than look to see what types of options we have come the end of the season.

The second deal has been rejected by the league, so it's back to the drawing board...

The first deal, which Syl touched on was Slava Kozlov, Sami Kapanen and some cash considerations to the Nords for Karl Alzner, Joe Pavelski, and Jerred Smithson.
A second (third) deal, the one that needed tweaking was approved this afternoon as well.
Going to Tampa Bay is Mike Smith, Kyle Wanvig, and Eric Lindros. Coming back to Quebec are Rhett Warrener, Byron Ritchie, Dan Cloutier, and a 3rd rounder in 08.
While Cloutier isn't someone we'd realistically like on our team, Mike Smith had to go to the Bolts to get Rhett and Ritchie. Cloutier is still rated pretty good for a backup as well.
I'm trying to get a hold of the other GM to make the 3rd deal possible.

Tampa was glad to add Smith. A young goalie that is coming into his own and may some day follow a path similar to Nashvilles Chris Mason and become a starter. The rest of the deal was pretty much filling cap space and moving guys who do not fit our team direction at the moment. Warrener will be missed. For some reason the sim really likes him (must be his experience)

And it's finaly done...
Heading to Anaheim:
Mike Peca
Steve Rucchin
Chris Simon
Mike Repik
TB 1st 08
PIT 1st 08
QUE 1st 09
$1.5M 06/07 Cap
Coming to Quebec:
Raffi Torres

This deal was on, off, on, rejected by the league, off, on, off and on over the last 24 hours. I'm sure I speak for the new Anaheim GM when I say that the both of us thank the other for the negotiations, no matter how stressful, and to the members of the CPHL HO for helping us find a common ground that worked for both sides.

This looks like overpayment to me. Peca is still a good forward, and three firsts....it just seems like a lot. I do like Upshall, and Torres is OK...I guess I'm just stuck on the three first round picks.

The way the league saw it... Upshall and Torres were basically two top 5 overall picks that will pan out. The bodies I sent aside from Repik wont be in the league, arguably, in 2 years. PIT 1st is technically a 2nd, TB's is a wildcard, and my 09 has a chance at Tavares... but with the roster I'm working with... not as likely.
I do think that had ANA had a year under his belt, I could have paid less...

Yeah, and I'm not taking a shot at you here. I'm sure that you just did what you had to in order to get a deal done. I am just not personally a big fan of Torres I suppose, so that is my bias showing through!
