The Calgary fish show and auction was advertised during the auction up here in Edmonton last weekend.
For anyone who enjoys fish, aquariums, etc etc, you are crazy not to go to the auctions. These auctions are where local breeders sell their stuff and frequently you're bidding with the owners/managers of the local pet stores on certain products or fish. I got one fish that I know retails for $50.00 for $10.00 (because I specifically went and checked out the prices before the auction), and there were some crazy deals out there for high supply, low demand species (like Jewel Cichlids which were going for less than $0.50 each). Tanks, fish, plants, filters, food.
In any event, it's worth going to look at if you have a tank and are looking for some neat stuff, or even if you're looking to set a tank up and want to get some good quality used items that blow anything you see in the bargain finder out of the water.
Advice: If you're a novice fish person go early and bring a pad of paper. Check out the viewing of the items for sale at the auction and write down the type of fish and the lot number so you know when it comes up. Some times the auctioneers can get all technical and go with the scientific genus and species (which I haven't a clue about), so it's best when you know that this is a "blue" something or other, or "catfish". It also helps to document what identical species sell for as the auction goes on so you know what to bid on. Best deals are early on or at the very end.
