I went to London Drugs. They have a checklist of the requirements that they go over with you to make sure it will pass.

I went to a little photo shop by my house which is in the co-op mall in oakridge if you live around there. Went right in and took 15mins and they were fine.

if you are in calgary...
Get them done accross the street from the Downtown passport office...
That way if there are any problems you can easily get them redone quickly....
There is a little shop that does them just west across the intersection on 4th (4th Ave and 1st St. SE.)

Two comments- one is that Calgary is a pretty big city.
The second- don't you have to take your pictures and get them signed by your guarantor? Not sure how well that would work out- I know I won't be asking my guarantor to come stand in line at the passport office with me.
Now; if somebody works in that part of downtown; that might be good suggestion. But not for the reason you gave.
Looking at getbak's suggestion of London Drugs- they have a passport photo guarantee. They will re-do it for free if the pictures get rejected. I like that.

I completely agree with Nufy, Blacks Photography is usually a sure thing. The quality is great and they are knowledgeable in the passport requirements.

If you're an AMA member and book a trip using their Travel Agency, they'll do your photos for free (otherwise, they're $10, I think).

This was going to be my suggestion as well. If you drop off your forms in person they will tell you right there if the photos are rejected. Theyll still take your application then you go get your photos redone and drop them off beside the main lineups so you dont wait as long.

Blacks will redo your photos if they get rejected and will give you a full refund as well so it turns out being free. Only problem is that Blacks charges almost $20 where as some smaller places might charge $5-$10.
Also, if you do the simplified application process now where you meet certain criteria and still have a valid passport then you dont need a guarantor to sign your photos or your application.

Blacks does charge more - but you get a nifty passport wallet with it as well. I've had mine for 5 years and countless trips. Blacks is a sure bet.

While I am an employee of Blacks and do know the cost is higher I also reccommend them, any location as I know quite a bit of effort is put into making sure each photo will pass. Plus in most cases we can print them off within half an hour.

I had my passport photo taken at Blacks. It was good and passport would have accepted if it wasn't for how long the picture was taken. I had a passport picture taken in October 2005 and just applied for passport in August this year. I got a call from Passport Office saying that unfortunately my picture is too old so I have to get another one but don't need a guarantor to sign it again. He told me there is Travel Agency office close by Passport Office in Millrise. I went then a week later i got my passport.

I think its $8 for B/W there. Or at least it was when I did mine in Fall 2005.

Ive done walmart every time, and never had a problem. They seem to be pretty aware of what the passport office will reject.

Futureshop is $9. They make sure the photo is good, the girl even put make-up on me to cover up forehead glare. Zero minute wait.

I'm in France right now, so obviously this isn't going to help you in Calgary, but they have these special photo booths everywhere here that do regulation passport pictures. You get 4 pictures for 4 euros.. pretty sweet!
As for getting passport photos in Calgary, I've had them done at AMA and Costco before, and both worked out well.
