Anyone else taking part in Electric Saturday
Looks like every electronics store in Calgary, and their dogs, are putting up a sale to combat the Big 4 Sale. Is anyone else taking part in these shenanigans?
I'll probably be in line Saturday at the Country Hills Future Shop. I was told that their sale was today. But at 8am this morning, I got turned away. That was awesome.
Hoping to pick up a TV... My wife is going to be on Mat Leave here soon, and I convinced her that she's going to watch a lot of television... and what better way than in High Def.
Where are you going, and what are you looking to pick up? Has anyone done these sales before? What can I expect for line ups? What time should one arrive?

Same here. Plus theres a lot of junk that gets cleared out at these sales. They put a one or two good items out at great prices to bring people in. Then the rest of the stuff is crap that people buy since theyve waited in line for several hours and dont want to go home empty handed.

I think I might go check out Visions just to see if the tv I bought a couple of weeks ago is lower now so I can get some money back. I'm in no hurry to do that though, going golfing in the morning so probably just pop in after my game

The good ol bait and switch aka loss leaders. I hate it when retailers do this.

I have never actually tried to go to one of these Soundsaround sales... But, this year, it so happens that one of the 50" plasma's they have is one that I had been considering buying.
For a $1900 TV, when they have 22 in stock, do I have any chance of getting it? Would I need to line up hours and hours in advance?
Any tips appreciatted.
And, Photon, nice price on the A2! I was very tempted to grab one, but I already have tons of Blu-Rays and dont want to support both formats yet. However, if this format stale mate continues to Christmas 2008, I will gow ith HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. It is probably what the manufactures want us to do.

Is there somewhere to view the flyer online? I went to Soundsarounds website but it isn't on there.

Not that I know of..
For the TV Draug, it's tough, guys said last year they got there a few hours before opening and there was "only" 150 people in line, and at opening there was over 500.
Crazy.

The only flyers that I have seen are in the Herald today. Visions and Soundsaround which don't advertise on their website had a couple of deals listed. For Soundsaround they had a few tvs listed like the Sony XBR 52' 1080p but has way too low to show advertised so you don't know how much it is. They did that to a couple of their tvs. So if you pick up the Herald today you can look at some of their deals which look to be pretty good

I guess it's a matter of how much your time is worth to you. If I can save $100 per hour by standing in line, then I'll do it.

I don't understand Sounds surround. Their stores are virtually empty every time i walk into them to check out a product...and after getting harassed by high pressure sales for 20 minutes and realizing the 'deal' they want to give me is a rip off I have to pry myself off them. Does anyone buy stuff at that store? Or Do they just blow all their inventory in a weekend at or below cost?

Good point. However there seems to be electronic sales going on all the time, so a sale like that will show up again. I also take into consideration the service and wether the store stands behind it's warranty. That's as big a factor as the price itself - well at least for me..
Plus, standing in line, in no way gaurentees you'll get the item that's on sale. Often there's a limited quantities of said item.

I stopped by Soundsaround, FS, and BB. There were some good deals on Panasonic Plasmas (all I really looked at)
42" - TH-42PX75U - $1299 at all three stores
50" - TH-50PX75U - $1899 at FS (unposted)
50" - TH-50PX600U - $1888 at Soundsaround (sold out)
58" - TH-58PZ700U - $4388 at Soundsaround (regular around $5700)
The 1080p versions of the 42's and 50's were also nicely discounted at all the stores ($2500 at BB, $1300 off), but I dont feel 1080p has any advantage on that small of a display in you are sitting more than 6 or 7 feet away (which I am).
In the end, I decided not to buy anything, and instead head down to the US and buy a TH-58PH10UK instead. I would have bought the 600U at $1888, or the 50PX75U if it were $200 cheaper.
