My new BBQ is screwed! Any ideas?
So I got a nice new Vermont Castings BBQ with our appliance package when we got our new house.. except we didn't have a deck at the time, so we couldn't use it.
Well over a year and a half later, we finally have a nice deck to put it on, so I roll it out this evening and start pulling off that plastic stuff they put on stainless steel to protect it.. except it's not coming off! It comes off in tiny pieces on half the BBQ and leaves behind glue residue!!
I can't use it with the plastic still on, it'll melt and get far worse I'm sure.
I tried goof-off and that kind of works for the residue that's left behind, but there's still tons of plastic left. To pick it all off would take months. I tried my razor scraper and it doesn't seem to do anything (possibly not sharp enough though).
Any ideas? I'm going to call VC tomorrow to see if they have any ideas. This sucks, if I have to do it by hand it'll be next year before I can even try my BBQ!

I'm tempted to say oven cleaner. That stuff will take off anything, and shouldl be safe on stainless steel, but I've never tried it so......follow my advice at your own risk.

Use lacquer thinner, I'm sure it wont hurt the stainless steel.

Goof off is basically lacquer thinner isn't it? I tried some more and it gets the residue pretty well, but the places where the plastic is there it just makes the plastic nice and clean.
WD-40, it is the master of all things, maybe I'll try that.
I really should get a sharper razor, that would probably help a lot.

Is that the same as paint thinner? I know paint thinner'll dissolve adhesive, so that may be the ticket.

Dab on a little turpentine? Or perhaps some petrol or oil? I know that motor oil ate through my ziplock bag before.

I wouldnt piss around with it. Call Vermont castings and see what they tell you. Stainless steel does stain especially when you apply 500 or 600 degrees to it... youll never wipe off the residue and then youll bake it in no matter how much $$$ your bbq cost.

Timberwolf Hearth products are the official servicers of Vermont Castings. This isnt a service problem, but I'm sure they've ran into this question before. Maybe give them a shout?

Im not sure if it works but heat it up with a hair dryer, then peel it off. Should get the glue warm enough.
I would call Vermont Castings first before you try anything suggested, dont want to wreck a nice BBQ.

I did try the laquer thinner on some of the less visible areas, and that seems to work pretty well, it dissolves the plastic glue and lets you pull it off, but it leaves a pretty messy residue.
I'll give VC a call in the morning to see what they say.

Lot's of good ideas here. I'd get a new Razor blade for your scrapper and use it in conjunction with the hair dryer first to get rid of the plastic and then gently rub the remaining glue off with WD-40. If the hair dryer doesn't do it try WD-40, scrapping, WD-40, scrapping, WD-40, etc.
If that doesn't work PM me and maybe we can work something out
PS: WD-40 is Flamable. Make sure you give it lots of time to evaporate before you start er up.

Try Carb-Cleaner. It is for cleaning gunk out of carborators, but eats away almost any residue I've ever encountered. It might also shrivel the plastic and allow you to easily scrape it off. It is made by Gunk and can be found at most auto parts stores. If you use it, be careful of painted surfaces. It will take the finish off paint. I dont believe it would wreck stainless steel at all.

the real question is why you had motor oil in a ziplock bag in the first place.
my vote however goes to gasoline or diesel...best thing for getting goop off of anything ever

Yeah I thought it was amusing that all the suggestions are highly flammable.. I was thinking just to soak it and light it on fire, that should get rid of it all.
Thanks for the suggestions all, I'll try a few more tomorrow, ran out of light this evening.

Barbeques aren't supposed to look pretty. Who cares about stains. They are a man's tool. They should look scruffed up and worked over and well-used. BUD.
