4th street NW @ Northmount is closed and there are cops and firefighters and ambulances everywhere, anyone know what happened?

Anybody know what happened last night on 52nd @ 22x? I could see quite a few cop cars (stopped, guns drawn), and a suspect vehicle. This was at 5ish. Must've been a pretty dangerous guy because there were at least 10 police vehicles.

I don't know what happened but they were there until after 7:30 last night. My bro-in-law went down 52nd around 4 pm yesterday afternoon and they turned him around.

I heard on the radio that it was a police chase and the police had to use a crusier to hit the guys car to get him to stop.

I got turned around on the 22x side, trying to get to Elgin. By the time I got all the way around (deerfoot), the car had moved north about 50 meters and was totally surrounded by the cop cars. Looked like he made a break for it.
It looked like a ford escape or a santa fe or some kind of smallish SUV. There were at least 7 cruisers plus two of those grey suburbans* and a couple paddy wagons. The guy must've been drunk if he thought he was getting away from that.
*I saw the grey suburban one evening downtown. Very intimidating. Was stocked with unusually large cops. Mentally noted to never screw with the grey suburban.

thats what some of the tac-team members drive around in. I got stopped as a pedestrian downtown once because i apparently matched a description of someone who just cased a joint somewhere. Damn it was scary! He drove right onto the sidewalk in-front of me, and jumped out and began the million questions in 1 second thing. haha. I had to walk all the way home because there we no cabs at all.

Actually, never screw with the Calgary Police force in general, they're actually quite organized and tough compared to many other forces. Calgary's SWAT team even came in second place behind none other than the LAPD in a simulation-style exercise a few years ago, although I can't remember what the name of the competition was called...

That's a pretty good rule of thumb... Don't mess with cops. But if you really feel that you want to mess with some cops, stay the hell away from teh grey suburban. Go for the donut muncher instead.

I have a few ex-rugby player friends that are now cops, one of which was a 2nd row for Canada. He's about 6'5" and tips the scales in and around 250+, and runs like a freight train. He's the kind of guy that would rather run through a fence than jump it, and has above average foot speed due to the abnormal length of his legs.
He's a beat cop on 1st street, and has told me all kinds of unholy stories about drugs and violence. Almost made me want to quit drinking. Almost.
